I have been hearing a lot of talk in the past couple of years by gun owners - like members of Gun Owners Of America and Ohioans For Concealed Carry, and even NRA people that, possibly, the National Rifle Associations was getting a bit too big for its holster, ie. the NRA has become a PAC of bureaucrats who are more becoming like what the AARP is to oldsters - losing its mind.
The NRA endorsed the Democrat incumbent Governor Ted Strickland over a more conservative John Kasich who in years past did not have the best record on Second Ammendment issues. Even though Kasich turned around on his understanding of the Right To Bear Arms Ammendment in the Bill of Rights, the NRA inexplicably spent a whole lot of gun owner money on last minute commercials which nearly deep sixed John Kasich.
I cannot believe that NRA members are that much of a one-issue group, but the staff and honchos at the NRA have been attempting to portray the rank and file rifle owner as some dumb dunce who would rather vote for a Democrat who promoted a member of Handgun Control Inc. (Lee Fisher, Strickland's Lieutenant Governor) and a defiantly anti gun Yvette McGee Brown, Strickland's running mate for governor. Kasich won, anyway, and the NRA has gunpowder on its face.
Late in his campaign for reelection as governor, Ted Strickland got a lot of publicity for taking a sudden interest in taking shooting lessons - with his wife. I do want to thank the Governor for his endorsing the Castle Doctrine in our great state of Ohio, but how could we have supported a man who has such close political and media friends (mostly liberal Democrats) who are so anti Second Ammendment?
Did Strickland promise the NRA something we don't know about?
They also supported Reid
THe Reid-lovin’ NRA SUCKS.
Nice blog trolling there...
NRA infiltrated by ‘progressives’? Looks that way to me.
I’m glad that Kasich won. He has the experience to deal with budget deficits. He just walked into a $8B buzzsaw.
I have mixed feelings about this. I like to jump all over organizations like NOW and the NAACP because of their obvious liberal slant. NOW only supports democratic women and the NAACP is coined the NAALCP. So, if the NRA sticks to its mission and supports those they deem the most 2nd Amendment friendly candidates, regardless of the letter after the candidate’s name, isn’t that showing a little integrity?
It’s not surprising a single issue organization would endorse someone who supports their single issue.
The NRA sucks; has for many years. They are nothing but a fund-raising machine. The NRA has sold out gun owners time after time, just to keep the battle going so they can raise more money. F’em.
Don't fall for this lame desperate Dem ploy. Kasich gets it. He's got his hands full with the Ohio economy. He will fully support the 2nd Amendment if it ever even comes up.
Like the GOP, a formerly useful organization on the way out.
The NRA is a 2nd Ammendment organization.
A Candidate who likes to BBQ babies, torture small animals, sell drugs to teenagers, allow felons to vote, burn churches and murder old people is perfectly fine.
As long as the NRA’s blinders are completely in place - all they care about is how a candidate supports the 2nd Ammendment.
They cannot see the forest, for the trees.
Its not surprising a single issue organization would endorse someone who supports their single issue.
I don’t think the NRA’s one issue is 2nd Ammendment or Guns - its themselves.
The Sierra Club was a “conservative” outfit at one time.
Nice blog trolling there...
Looks like you’re blog trolling the blog trollers.
Well done.
The NRA has completely lost this gun owner.
Same here. (They keep sending me stuff, but the divorce is final)
Me too. After being an NRA member for years I will not be renewing my membership. I have joined Gun Owners of America to continue the Second Amendment battle.
Unfortunately they dont always.
Years ago when I was politcally active, I hosted pro 2A rallies on the steps of the State Capitol, did a cable access tv show that was pro 2A etc.... When I ran for office as a libertarian the NRA supported the GOP guy who was not a member (I was) and who had never even fired a gun in his life.
And this was in a district that is severely left. The GOP has no chance here, but a libertarian or a pro gun democrat could win here.
I was supported by a some other great 2A groups though.
Not trying to start a flame war...just fyi
I took my NRA renewal money and sent it to Sharron Angle with a note explaining where the money was coming from. Then I joined GOA.
That's why he put it in the "Blogs" section.
Duh.
And he's absolutely right. The NRA needs to reap the whirlwind. That organisation alone is probably responsible for stealing several victories from conservative Republicans last night, and certainly endangered several more. In doing so, they gave aid and comfort to the anti-gun Democrat agenda, regardless of what individual Democrats may do with the issue.
Strickland is truly a pro-gun Democrat with a sound voting record to prove it. On gun rights he was unquestionably a big improvement over Taft, his Republican predecessor.
Strickland deserved both of their endorsements. They are gun rights organizations, and on that single issue, Strickland has proved himself to be the better candidate.
I'm however, not a single issue voter and I'm glad Strickland lost. I'm however also glad that those three gun rights organizations aren't hypocrites. They aren't conservative organizations, they are gun rights organizations. They support those that support gun rights regardless of their views on other issues. That is exactly what they should do. Especially in Ohio where we have a history of Republican Party leadership that doesn't firmly support gun rights.
Being a pro-gun Democrat is exactly what got Strickland into office. It is something that wouldn't have been so powerful for him if the Ohio Republican Party would quit putting forth big government Republicans that obviously don't trust citizens with guns.
