A Primer in Economics, Explained over Beer
Conservative Hideout ^ | 9-29-10 | Matt

I received this via email from one of my non-blogging friends. I loved it, and thought you might too. I cannot vouch for the “author.” It is a viral email, so you never know.

THE TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN BEER

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100…

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this…

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1.

The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7..

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.

The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

Even a libtard can figure this out. Or can they?

Since libtards I know are suspicious of beer drinkers (you know, NASCAR and NFL stereotyping) it might be wise to change “beer” into Starbucks coffee or white wine or designer bottled water. Only then would they see the progressive taxation lesson.

Make it even more realistic in that the first four drank 80% of the beers.

I can see that logic. However, for the college lefties, they could use joints.

True, but then the math gets overly complicated.

Good story. I looked it up on snopes.com

The only thing they really comment on is who wrote it. Dr. Kammerschen, denies it was he that did so.

Minor point for some, I know, but no sense in spreading it and attributing it to the wrong person.

They author did say that he couldn’t vouch for the identity. I guess it was an email.

You are correct. I clicked on the link, where authorship is attributed, then did not go back and reread your post.

I also liked this analogy enough that I passed it on to my e-mail list.

I did delete the name of the supposed author though and linked everyone to snopes.

“Even a libtard can figure this out. Or can they?”

Nope. This has been around in various forms for quite a while. I’ve tried to get libdims to understand it a few times. You would not believe the convoluted “logic” they use to explain what’s wrong with the story.

Also add that the middle income people in the group work for the rich guy - and they also lost their jobs when he moved on...

Heh, sent that to our college aged kids. One is an Economics major; can’t wait to hear what she thinks about it.

It was a rhetorical question.

Yes, liberals can figure this out and furthermore, they think it’s redistribution of wealth and heartily approve of it.

Take the analogy one step further. If 100 men were paying the tab, the richest 1 would pay $40.

If the focus is on income taxes, it appears that the richest man pays $73 not $59.

But it’s also the case that if payroll taxes are included, it’s no longer true that the poorest 4 pay nothing.
