More than 30,000 people make their home on Cape Hatteras on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Six million more visit the barrier island each year to fish, swim, and enjoy the area's natural beauty. But for the past couple of years, the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore have been closed to all. Why? The piping plover. This little bird is killing the economy and livelihood of the residents of one of the loveliest areas on the eastern seaboard. All because of a handful of environmentalists -- eco-terrorists -- who have used pseudo-science to determine that the birds are more important than the people who also inhabit the area.
Tonight we're talking with three of Buxton, NC's businessmen whose businesses are dying -- join us as we hear from Hal Lester, owner of Finnegan's Restaurant; John Couch, owner of Red Drum Texaco and president of the Outer Banks Preservation Society; and Donnie Bowers, professional photographer and owner of Indian Town Gallery. On the other hand, when we visit this area, my cats love the plovers as snacks.
If the residents and tourists don’t vote-out the Dem Ecofreaks in Congress this fall, they deserve everything they’ll get — or not get.
The Feds close my favorite beach in the summer to protect the Plover. Plum Island, MA is a barrier island north of Boston. The plovers nest on the beach. They close down miles(5-6 literally)of beach in May , June and July. Typically they do not reopen until mid August.
The state of MA is a little more reasonable. They put up snow fence 30’ around the nest.
In Northwest Lower Michigan, in the town of Cross Village, there is a sign on the beach saying that this strip of beach is closed because of the “endangered” Piping Plover.
The thing is, there haven’t been any sightings since the mid 1930’s!
