New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (credit: NJ Governors Office) From jcap17 OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (CBS 2) Determined to turn New Jerseys education system on its head, Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday unveiled a tough-love reform package that will make classroom achievement not seniority or tenure the basis for pay hikes and career advancement in Garden State public schools. Christie is turning his take-no-prisoners style to the classroom, demanding a top to bottom overhaul of how New Jersey students learn and teachers teach. And that means undoing tenure, seniority and other union work rules. We cannot wait. Your children are sitting in these classrooms today. We cannot wait to make it better, Christie told CBS 2s Marcia Kramer. Unqualified teachers will feel the lash. The governor is demanding that teachers in kindergarten through fifth grade actually pass tests in reading and math in order to be certified. It might lead to the firing of teachers and principals who hurt our children, Christie said. The governor wants to turn the old seniority system inside out and put quality teaching ahead of lack-luster performance. He will: * Prohibit salary scales based on seniority * Grant raises based on classroom performance * Give tenure based on classroom performance We are paying a fortune for something that is not giving our children the hope and the feeling that their tomorrow can be better than their future, Christie said. The governor said he would appoint a task force to come up with standards to measure teacher achievement. Educational experts applauded the governors actions. He is with excellence in education for everyone by prioritizing teachers their brilliance, their art and their skills. We will dramatically improve the quality of education of our kids in New Jersey, particularly those most in need, said Derrell Bradford, director of Excellent Education for Everyone. The governor needs the state Legislature to approve the changes to seniority and tenure. The rest of the things he did by signing executive orders. A spokesman for the New Jersey Education Association attacked the governors plan saying that once again he was trying to implement education reform without any input from educators.
Not a homeschooling thread, but an educational one of particular importance to parents in New Jersey.
The man is gonna get himself killed by messin’ with these union types. It would be safer to go after the Mafia.
That bastard!
They will go nuts over this. Utterly, frothing at the mouth, chewing on the carpet, wetting themselves NUTS.
I hope that is not how it works out, but he is stepping on a lot of toes.
He’s making up for lost time.
“I hope that is not how it works out, but he is stepping on a lot of toes.”
That’s what happens when you dance with the unions— they all have two left feet. ;-)
The man does not rest. Moving from one issue to the next, building up victories for small government. He doesn’t let the enemy up for air before he punches them again. He is EXACTLY what we need at a national level. ALL Republicans need to be this combative with government bureaucrats and their Dem enablers.
I just hope they have the common courtesy to do it in public so we have their meltdowns on tape. Seriously, can you imagine the ads we could string together?
At this point, in many states and municipalities, it would be best to just do whatever it takes to shut the public education system down completely. They are spending $15,000+ per student in these places and are completely failing. We’re all paying for this and it is breaking us. Let the kiddies stay home or go to private school, whatever. Whether there is a school or not they’ll be sure to find ways to get stoned, pregnant, sick with STDs, whatever. People can’t keep paying for this.
He’ll destroy education. Teachers will leave wholesale. I’m voting for a Dem for Governor for the first time because Florida’s legislature tried the same thing. We need a Dem to nullify them.
There is no difference between a teachers union and a mafia family.
Are you high? Seriously. Why would good, competent teachers leave? The only ones who will leave are the bad, incompetent teachers, which is the whole point.
So many high paid NEA types would be out of their jobs if Christie carries through,it’s motive for his murder in my opinion.
That is a negative. It take a clear focus to see a need and he is responding to this.We support him.
How dare he... Asking teachers to actually prove they know what the hell they are teaching about... LOL...
I love this guy, we need many more like him and our fight to take back America will succeed.
Hey, buddy — education is and already has been DESTROYED. Many public schools are merely holding tanks/and/or daycare drop offs for either working parents or strung-out and/or disinterested parents w/ many, many other priorities other than the education of their children.
I for one am TIRED of paying taxes for holding tanks that produce nothing. We have to spend our time homeschooling our special needs son bec the local public school will only “pretend” to teach him to read. It’s a pathetic waste of precious resources.
The NJ gov is trying to SAVE education.
Christie is showing the rest of the State’s Governor’s what real LEADERSHIP is....
