Feds Radiating Americans? And What About the Vdara Death Ray?

A story hot on the internet today regards concerns that Federal authorties have been exposing US citizens to possibly dangerous radiation at x-ray machines placed at the entrance on airports through which one must pass before entering the facility, with the #1 Google Search today "Feds radiating Americans"- hard to conclude they're happy about it, lol. Now the rampant rumor is that the US government has purchase X-ray machines that can peer inside homes, cars, and clothing...

And it's not optional of course, all air travelers must pass though the current machines- so besides the civil liberties issues at stake, there's overriding health concerns from the X-rays.

But as for the new Vdara Hotel/Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada...

The Daily Mail (UK) reports today that some serious radiation has been coming down on guests frequenting the Vdara Hotel's luxurious pool area, due to a design flaw that reflects -and actually magnifies- the sun's rays and roasts guests/melts luggage, etc- rutt-ro: Guests at a new hotel in Las Vegas have complained of receiving severe burns from a 'death ray' of sunlight caused by the unique design of the building. Due to the concave shape of the Vdara hotel, the strong Nevada sun reflects off its all-glass front and directly onto sections of the swimming pool area below. The result has left some guests with burns from the powerful rays and even plastic bags have been recorded as melting in the heat.

Chicago attorney Bill Pintas felt the power of the dangerous ray first hand last week. 'It felt like I had a chemical burn. I couldn't imagine why my head was burning,' he said. 'Within 30 seconds, the back of my legs were burning. My first though was, 'Jesus, they destroyed the ozone layer!'

Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Resorts, which owns the Vdara hotel, said they was aware of the issue and designers were working with resort staff to come up with a solution. In fact it is claimed that the designers foresaw the issue with the reflecting sun but thought they had solved it by installing a high-tech film on the south-facing panes of glass.

However, Mr Absher, conceded it had not been enough and some of the guests had suffered as a result. The Las Vegas Review Journal quotes one hotel employee as saying the building's design causes the sunshine to be diverted 'like a magnifying glass that shines down' over a space of about 10 by 15 feet as the poolside. And as the Earth rotates, the spot moves across the pool area...

OMG. The design is a refracting mirror.

Now they know how all those ants they burned with a magnifying glass felt. The smoke is a clear warning.

I’ll bet that one could find a maximum “sweet spot” if they tried hard enough. It can keep your lunch warm.

If the hotel was in Canada it might heat the pool.

Design flaw that created a parabolic mirror. Seems like there’s a theater in San Fransisco that had the same problem till they roughed up the shiny surface.

Of course, dealing with that bothersome guest becomes much easier. All staff has to do is position the guest at poolside, and ply him with complimentary drinks until he passes out. Then, as the sun passes through 2pm... spontaneous combustion. "... and he was such a fixture here at the hotel, he once tipped me a whole quarter...."

Exactly. Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do. They can set up some kind of shield I’m sure, or they’re going to have to buy some more very expensive real estate.

Archimedes could have told them something about this.

* Yes I know a Myth-Busters purported to bust this. They were wrong, because they used too small a ship and assumed a ship was in motion. Seige ships were anchored to utilize catipults. In 1973 a series of tests was run by a greek engineer, Dr. Ioannis Sakkas. He used 50 bronzed mirrors on a smal boat. In about 2 minutes it was in flames.

This feat should attract a lot of cannibal guests to the hotel.
