Stephen Colbert Goes to Congress
REPUBLICAN REDEFINED ^ | T Christopher

You really can't make this stuff up folks.  Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert was invited to Capitol Hill today to address the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Security by Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren.  After reading an opening statement, (the first video below) which sounded a lot like his nightly monologue, he quickly came under fire from many on the subcommittee.

What blew me away was not that he turned the testimony into a sideshow, but the fact that these mindless idiots wasted the time and taxpayer money to have him there in the first place.  I mean, don't they have more pressing items on their agenda - like oh I don't know - fixing our porous borders?  After all, what did they really think Colbert was going to offer to the discussion?

As much as I despised seeing Major League Baseball players marched before Congress, at least there was a grain (and I mean a grain) of actual purpose behind their testimony.  There was at least some good, albeit minimal, in shedding light on the problem of drug abuse in professional sports.  While I hardly believe Congress is the appropriate forum for such endeavors, it now seems like a noble objective having witnessed the debacle that was today.  Sammy Sosa's momentary English amnesia now looks dignified in light of what we have just witnessed.

Now I'm not one of those blow-hards that fails to see the humor in the act of Stephen Colbert.  I post many a video clip from he and his brother-at-arms Jon Stewart.  I think a little levity in politics from time to time helps keep us from diving off the deep end of seriousness.  That said, there's a time and place for everything... and this was neither the time nor the place.  In fairness to Colbert, I do not blame him for this display.  He was simply answering an invitation to bring his comedy program to Capitol Hill.  Via Memeorandum

Zoe Lofgren should have to pay back the American Taxpayer for the time wasted.
