President Obama declared to the world that Internet should be free in his speech at the United Nations:
"We will promote new tools of communication so people are empowered to connect with one another and, in repressive societies, to do so with security. We will support a free and open Internet, so individuals have the information to make up their own minds."It is important for the President to clarify what he means by Free Internet. Uncensored Internet? Or free of charge? If he meant Free Internet as uncensored, what is the difference between free Internet and open Internet?
It would be very disturbing if the President of the United States is going around the world advocating for Internet to be for free. This is a clear path to gain control over the modern day of communications.
Soon the UN will be talking about the peoples right to access The Net. I doubt that the Internet providers will give away their product for free. Like the health care providers they will go out of business when mandates to provide their product for free collapse their business. The government will be there waiting to take over.
So the only way to give the world free Internet is if the tax-payers pay for it. That will ensure world-wide government control over the Net.
The free flow of ideas is causing too much head-ache for the rulers all over the globe. China and Iran are censoring the Internet content. President Obama frequently complains that the information on the Internet is not helpful to his agenda.
One sentence in a long speech may be planting the seeds of the future government control of the communications. I wonder how this sentence is translated all over the world. Free as freedom or free as you dont have to pay for it?
Go here and look at this map, paid for by Porkulus money:
http://www.broadband.gov/maps/availability.htm
Then tell me why we should give away $7.2 BILLION to expand broadband access. Oops, silly me, I should say “why we GAVE away $7.2 BILLION”...past tense. Next week is the end of the program that was supposed to save the economy by creating all kinds of new jobs.
Now if we’d just had the map before the money was all spent...
Someone tell Barry that you need a computer and an ISP first.
Free and open just like the Cuban model!
I’ll take free interwebs. I want a pony too. Can I have a pony?
And I want a unicorn with a frickkin laser beam on its head that sh*ts Skittles made of gold.
An Internet that is free to everyone is an Internet that will be a piece of crap. Watch how fast it will go downhill when those who maintain, grow and speed up the Internet realize there is no financial incentive whatsoever to do so.
Of course, liberals would love it if the Internet became useless. Party officials would still have a functioning network, of course, but the rest of us? Not so much.
Even I realize he meant “free” as in free speech not “free” as in free beer.
The government has already paid for broadband expansion, giving the telcos billions in various considerations in the 90s. They didn’t deliver. I believe part of our phone bills goes towards that too.
OMG!
The snake is opening it’s mouth again.
We know how he/they work.
Words coated with sugar for the dumbazzes.
Well, we know for a fact he isn’t speaking about an uncensored Internet. He is a socialist, marxist liberal. He thinks the government should vet and control what goes out there. But make no mistake. He says “Free” but he doesn’t mean it.
If you were one of the left's beloved and coddled "poor" then you would have those things for free (or at least free to you)
I’m thinking only the anti-christ can pull off all
the evil things this person is doing.
This is a typical Marxist Trojan Horse. Once the government owns it, by giving it away, they will control the content. Our free speech will disappear and our information will be controlled and censored.
Free means government controlled and censored.
I think I’ll just stay with my current service provider.
What is the difference between free internet and open internet?
Free would be free as in speech. Open would be open to all people and technologies.
We know Al Gore didn’t invent the Internet, but do you remember who actually did, or rather who commissioned the invention of the Internet?
I can’t afford anymore free stuff.
Everybody needs a phone.
And how about free food?
Everybody needs food.
And how about free [INSERT WISH HERE]?
Everybody needs [INSERT WISH HERE].
“While we are handing out goodies, I have to say that I would like to have a mansion and a yacht.”
And a string of poloponies..
I hope you are right.
