Why close the Federal Department of Education?
Big Bureaucracy ^ | September 18th, 2010 | Ellie Velinska

Education in America is run by the states. However during the last couple of decades Washington DC is moving strongly in direction of federalizing this realm of the social life. New Jersey runs its own system of education funded by the local taxes. Tax-payers in NJ also give money to the federal government in Washington DC.

President Obama creates $4 billion ‘Race to the Top’ education program and tells NJ to compete for the funds. In the best case scenario the people of NJ will get part of their tax-money back. The rest will go for funding the bureaucrats in the Federal Department of Education.

It is a Big Bureaucracy as evident by the fact that NJ failed to secure $ 400 million of the Obama ‘Race to the Top’ money due to a clerical error. In the hundreds of pages of applications the clerks in NJ put one document with a wrong date and the Feds said: You lose suckers!

Governor Christie and the people of the state of NJ were hoping to get back their own tax-payer money for education (which is a sole responsibility of the state).

If the federal government has 4 billion dollars for education that means that they overtaxed the people of the USA with 4 billion dollars. Those $4 billion should have stayed in the states and be used for education, not going to Washington DC to feed the ego of bureaucrats having fun creating thousands of pages of applications and red tape for the states to get back their education funds...

The Feds tax us excessively and then make us beg them to get back the funds that shouldn’t have left the states in the first place.

You covered it nicely! DOE should go before everybody gets fatally addicted to its nonsense.

They don’t even accredit colleges - voluntary associations (created in Victorian times) still do that! The DOE was a big gift to the NEA from Carter: one that keeps on giving.

“DOE should go before everybody gets fatally addicted to its nonsense.”

Not just Education! Energy, NASA (despite my being a huge fan), Transportation, HHS - all the things not authorized by the Constitution ought to go!!!

As to whether we’re fatally addicted to any of them, well, I suppose the test is whether we can elect a Congress that actually cuts them...

Anybody see Morton Kondracke on Fox news last night?

I about fell off the couch laughing at his comments about the Dept of ED.

Tea party candidates are extremist wacko wanting to abolish the Dept of ED when we are 27th in civilized countries in education.

That dumbass doesn't understand or know the Dept of Ed is probably the # 1 reason we are 27th.

He certainly is a Jackass. Has he ever been outside the Beltway? Maybe if we just walled off the Beltway it would help. Keep them all in there and sever all communications.

The question is more like “why keep it running?” DoE has never demonstrated any value and gets an F on its report card by the American people.

The DOE is unconstitutional, but then so is Obama’s whole presidency, and very few people seem to care about that.

Our entire government depends on people not noticing that the Emperor has no cloths on.

Education is a matter for the states- however they wish to handle it. The federal government has no business there. The Weimar Republic was a federal state, in some respects like their own. One of the first things the Nazis did was to defederalize it, and one of the first features of their centralized state was a centralized education system. Federalism was and is a bulwark against tyranny.

“The most effectual means of preventing [the perversion of power into tyranny are] to illuminate, as far as practicable, the minds of the people at large, and more especially to give them knowledge of those facts which history exhibits, that possessed thereby of the experience of other ages and countries, they may be enabled to know ambition under all its shapes, and prompt to exert their natural powers to defeat its purposes.”- Thomas Jefferson

Don’t talk much about all that, though. Get power and then just whack it in the name of the constitution.
