And Bill Buckley Was Wrong!
Illinois Review ^ | September 18, 2010 A.D. | John F. Di Leo

Reflections on the Buckley Rule... Journalist Charles Krauthammer has challenged the wisdom of the Christine O’Donnell nomination, in a well-argued, conventional-wisdom-tinted column entitled “The Buckley Rule.”

The thesis is simple, and makes sense: WFB’s default candidate selection process for National Review was always to support, in any race, the most conservative candidate who can win.

And Bill Buckley was wrong.

The usually brilliant Charles Krauthammer has joined the naysayers, nattering about Christine O'Donnell's primary victory in Delaware... and he bases his analysis on his adherence to the wisdom of Bill Buckley's approach at National Review.

I never dreamed that I'd ever write an article with this title, but... my thoughts on the matter are in Illinois Review today, if you're interested. Have a great day!

John McKeating is the perfect example of where the Buckley rule gets you.

Another variation of “we hate RINOs” from Freepers.

My opinion (which is probably the Rove/Krauthammer/Perrino opinion) is that we would rather take control and block Obama’s march to a Soviet-style police state than back Tea Party people is questionable states.

So, I think O’Donnell will get spanked and the Dems take the seat.

Hmmm. Christine O’Donnell is not “electable” because she just got elected in the primary election to run in the general. Oh. Kay. Got it.

Well reasoned article.

Using 'the most electable' as nominating criteria also allows the media in to help us define who's most electable - and who's "un-electable".

And we all know how that ends up.

The "Rove/Krauthammer/Perrino opinion" is what led to our current "Soviet-style police state".

Remember Einstein's definition of insanity.

Follow the dots. ….. The origin of the BACKSTABBER WING OF THE GOP is
Mitt Romney, who appears to be behind the Toyko ROVE attacks on winning candidate O’Donnell.

“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what's going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.”

“Rove has made no secret of his support for Romney as McCain’s VP. ”

Bingo! Folks, we have a winner!

So, I think O’Donnell will get spanked and the Dems take the seat.

Perhaps. But I have a different take on this issue. We can go along with the "Buckley Rule" approach and continue to pragmatically elect RINOs. We can see from the history of the last 80 years how that works out: Periods of rapid government takeover of our wealth and rights during Democratic administrations and periods of slow government takeover of our wealth and rights during Republican administrations.

I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF IT. THAT APPROACH IS SIMPLY SLOW DEATH.

The alternate approach is to elect real conservatives who will not just slow the Socialist/Marxist train but, instead, reverse it. If we fail in this effort we are just going to go to hell as a nation at the Democrat's pace.

The American people need to make the decision: Do they want to live free or under the boot of a Socialist Bureaucracy. I say let's get on with it. The longer we wait the less likely we are to win our freedom.

The Senate is not like the house. Majoirty carries minimal voting power, and one liberal vote on our side does much more damage than one liberal vote from the other side. Look at the damage Mccain was able to do on campaign finance reform and immigration from our side of the aisle. It was the McCain wing that forced the bush tax cuts to be reduced to get through the senate. Adding a leftist from Delaware would have just strengthened the far left coalition of Lindsey Graham, the Maine sisters, and newly reelected McCain.

This is kind of ironic since Bill Buckley ended up supporting Joe Liebermann

Ditto to that. Why even have a party philosophy if all your candidates barely represent your ideals. That’s idea behind different parties in the first place...to have a different set of goals than the other parties. The idea is to give voters clear choices. Castle was hardly a conservative.

The rule doesn't apply: it says vote for the "most conservative;" that eliminates Castle from consideration.

I remember hearing Schwarzenegger was the "most electable" candidate in CA's governor race - that worked out pretty well.

Then.... you got your RINO RULE....
"Put your finger in the air (to seem intelligent) but vote for what the POLLS/pundits tell you to vote for"..

RINOs are cowards.. and dishonest.. i.e. like democrats..

The key problem with the Buckley Rule is therefore that it gets out of control. To support a liberal here and there, because that’s “the best we can do” here and there, not only fills our caucus with uncontrollable mavericks who doom our party’s policy goals at the capitol, it also irrevocably mars the Republican brand in the eye of the voter.”

Well stated. The hard and fast application of the Buckley rule has gotten us in the mess we find ourselves today. The Republicans have lost brand identity and in the process nominated candidates who will lead us down the same road to perdition, albeit at a slightly slower pace.

The argument that true conservatives can't be elected is a fiction that's been foisted upon us to a great degree by the media along with certain Republican power brokers. We've seen that argument proven wrong time and again but we consistently fall back into that rut after being brow beaten with the same old tired lines about electability.

Bottom line, vote for the candidates who most closely align with your beliefs and values. And whatever you do, don't publicly whine and tear down the party's nominee when you're nominee has just been soundly whacked. It's unbecoming.

Right now all this talk of party loyalty we've been fed appears to be a one-way street.

Someone who use to be one of my favorite conservative talk radio hosts, Michael Medved subscribes to the Buckley rule. He said the other day that he would have voted for Lisa Murkowski if he lived in Alaska. Wonder if he would change his mind now that she is trying to sink Joe Miller by dividing the vote.
