Looking for canned cat food recommendations (for my cats, wiseguy).

We tried Fancy Feast for awhile, but las kittehs appear to like it not.

I've read a couple of the cat food threads on FR from around the time of the cat food recall back in 2007 (here and here), but wanted to hear what canned foods that people recommend/are feeding their cats these days.

Blue Buffalo is the only food I could find with no corn. It stopped the vomiting. Pet Smart carries it, and they run $5 off coupons in the Sunday paper occationally.

My cat is really old (16 years) and her entire life she ate dry food, until a few months ago. She seems to like the gravy in the canned cat food. Sorry, I don’t have any recommendations. I have the same question about canned food that you have.

I don't have much time to sleep as an around the clock careprovider but my 3 dogs KNOW not to wake the Mama.

Yet as soon as I open my eyes and stretch/vocalize it's 3 dogs in rotation up the steps (high bed) in my face every 8 minutes asking for Breakfast.

True story...one night there was a mouse in my house (I live out in the country) and neither my cat or dog would do a thing about the mouse. I even picked my cat up and placed her in front of the mouse (who was eating her dry cat food!!) Eventually, my dog stepped up and killed the mouse.

I started my cats on Nutro and was told Eukanuba was a step up so I switched. The place I buy from started getting the Euk in coffee sized bags which I thought was a rip off. Then I was told Wellness was a step up from Euk so I switched again. The problem is they seem to be puking too much on the Wellness so I’m looking to switch/step up yet again.

As for the wet food, I used to give them cat tuna. They used to love it but my vet said I should just give them dry food so I stopped. Recently I went back to giving them the cat tuna and they love it but I’m not sure it’s a wise long-term plan. Oh are they going to be choked when I cut them off of it again. :)

Did you say Doxie? I LOVE MY DACHSHUND, HE IS SO ADORABLE The two Labradors are his slaves..... Hell I'm his slave. I have one Lab that will come bouncing around the corner down the hall when I do the Johney Carson Theme song and say Heres....Johnney. Had to give up the Cat part of the pet scene a decade ago...too many ending up as road kill trying to get to the crab pots at the fishing gear shed across the road, or getting stuck in the crab pots and meow, meowing for help.

My Princess Kitty LOVES Tiki Cat canned food.

I mean absolutely LOVES it. It’s all natural, no grain, and the ones that say cutlets really are...with recognizable chunks of fish.

I like Science Diet. Have used it for years. Have tired other things for both cats and dogs and I came back to Science Diet. The dry food with occasional wet food. My cats and dogs are healthy on this food.

Talk to two different vets and you'll get two different answers! Just took our newest adoptee in the vet's for shots and he's a couple of pounds overweight. Vet said cats are chronically dehydrated because of dry food which is why they end up with kidney problems in later life. He recommended we use wet only, with a little bit of dry food for ~crunchies~.

He's already put our older overweight cat on a strict wet food diet, 1/2 can twice a day. Just enough food to keep her from getting fatty liver disease, but I'm scared of her becoming diabetic, so we're doing it.

Vet recommended Greenies for cats to keep their teeth clean. LSAggie (hobbing on hubby's account)

Kittehs are obligate carnivores. They must be fed like meat eaters because they do not properly digest carbohydrates (the primary component in grains, found in DRY food). There is evidence that feeding grain-based diets is making diabetes out of our kittehs which is detailed below:

I kept a diabetic cat alive for years, by twice daily insulin injections and feeding a meat-based diet. You want to feed a canned meat-based diet with the lowest % kcal from carbohydrates. Avoid "gravy" formulas. The chart below goes to a table showing these values.

Feeding canned food is good for kitteh for another reason: cats, primarily males are prone to urethral blockage by crystal formation. Kittehs should always have plenty of fresh water available, but it it hard to get them to drink enough water if they are eating dry food.

I am presently feeding Friskies Turkey and Giblets dinner.

For years, I've feed my two cats Science Diet Indoor formula dry food, on the recommendation of my vet. I have "Laurel and Hardy" cats: one is fat, the other is skinny. Both are indoor cats and get the same amount of dry food. That says something about metabolism!

About a year ago, on the recommendation of a conservative friend, I began cutting back on their dry food and started them on Wellness brand can food. Both my cats love it! It's high quality, high protein, low carbs. But it ain't cheap. About $1.70 for a 5.5 oz can. My skinny cat is maintaining his weight, while my fat cat has loss about 1.5 pounds. (He now weighs about 19 pounds)

I think generally any canned food will be better than dry because the water and low carbs dry food doesn’t have. The only argument for dry food is teeth health...you can buy a $6 tootrush/toothpaste from petsmart. I just bought 60 food lion cans for 6 bucks. They’re 35 cent each but they have a kickback each one you buy.

Easy to buy & store in bulk, no mess, cleans teeth.

What’s not to like?
