YEARS ago when I worked in a bookstore I got dirty looks from the rest of the staff when I pointed out that the "banned books week" or month materials showed only books that were "challenged"--in other words, some parent dared to ask that their tax money not pay for a book going into a school library, usually.

You know your stuff, Darkwolf. By liberal thinking if ANYONE objected to ANY BOOK it was the equivalent of 'banning'. And liberals wanted everyone to know their book WAS BANNED - desperate for attention, crying for news coverage... The new phrase is 'attention whores' - and while crude - it fits. Oh, can I get banned in Boston for saying that? Can we huddle in our victimhood together? Is there such a thing as a liberal who's NOT creepy?

They wanted MSM coverage based on a lone mother at some PTA meeting objecting to a book the school library didn't buy was enough to get their hearts a flutter. Even though - as you point out - the book was readily available any bookstore.

The difference is that some of Mapplethorpe’s photography is extremely good.

My English teacher used to gush about how “brilliant and misunderstood” the protagonist (whose name I’ve blessedly forgottem) was. BS, he was completely self-consumed and ignorant.

Stupid book.

Pleh.

Holden Caulfield: One very spoiled and self-centered egotist.

What he needed was a kick in the rear end and a stern reprimand to “Go! Get a life!”

Don’t even get me started on Kereouwac (?) ... “Lolita” another waste of time. I did for some bizarre reason enjoy “Naked Lunch” but I wouldn’t claim to have understood it.

The Guardian obituary is interesting, not least because the author, Mark Krupnick, died seven years before Salinger.

So was the childrens book Little Black Sambo, a story of a boy that lived in the jungle....The libs had it removed from all library’s and its never been published....was not racist in any way...a story of a little boy and a tiger...my father used to read me books all the time, especially sunday mornings in bed. 3-4 year olds didn’t see race as a problem....now its shoved in everyone’s face every day, just like the gay (?) agenda..

Kerouac lived in St. Petersburg when he was old - my home area. I read On the Road and liked it ... but it was so many years ago ... might not like it today. That said, I liked Leonard Cohen's, Beautiful Losers and one reviewer said it was the most disgusting book ever published in Canada... thankfully it was never banned.

My main problem with artists and writers is when they write and produce mainly to offend because they lack talent. And to add insult to injury - there are publishers who buy the stuff to vent their hatred of conservatives and traditional Americans.
