Need Anti-virus help
9/8/10

Posted on 09/08/2010 1:26:55 PM PDT by pabianice

Today, for the second time in 2 1/2 weeks, I got the Norton 360 Big Red X of Death and my PC would no longer connect to the web/internet. Back to the shop for another $65 whack.

Can Freepers recommend or link me to a serious anti-virus software download or a CD that I can obtain to get rid of viruses Norton can't cure? All comments would be appreciated. I run Windows XP Home on my PC. I am not a software guy.

Thanks.

Thanks,

Just checked ‘search programs’ by typing ‘mrt’. Yes, it’s there, I clicked it and was asked if I want to run it. Running Windows 7. I like it.

I run Microsoft Security Essentials. I like it. I haven’t had a single problem.

I’m a Mac fan, too. I worked as a rater for an internet search giant and for the first year, ran a Windows based unit. Due to the areas that I had to check out, my computer was exposed to all sorts of nasty bugs which totally screwed it up. The second and final year of my contract, I had a Mac Pro which ran like a dream and which I am still using. No problems. No bugs. I love Macs.

Got mine last year and I keep finding new stuff. I really like the built in text to speech software, it reads what ever you highlight to you except for PDF and Word docs. I found something new today. When you are in “Private Browsing” mode you can vote in the online polls over and over because it blocks your ISP and cookies, way good for FReeping!

Sounds like you have more than one and your software isn’t getting all of them.

I’d recommend running Malwarebytes and Bitdefender. Down load them both. Run Maleware bytes, reboot then run Bitdefender.

Everyone loves Malewarebytes but Bitdefender is the best at finding viruses then eliminating loose registry pointers.

Avast and AVG are both good choices, but you may have a malware infection that many anti-virus programs do not remove. Try using Super Antispyware ..a free malware remover in addition to your anti-virus. I had a malware infection get through my anti-virus software which turned off Microsoft updates. Super Antispyware was recommended to me by MS tech support. I worked and I still use it periodically.

What was the error reported by N360? Did you know the AV scanner runs in safemode. I’ve had many systems running N360 without any major problems. With that said high probability I’ll be transitioning to Ms Seurity essentials. You know when windows crashes and it asks if it can send a report to MS, well alot of virus/malware writers still send their reports to MS. This has greatly helped MS figure out what’s being reated and how to kill it.

Thanks all for your help! Turned out to be a firewall issue. Somehow it got set to deny internet connectivity. I have no clue how it happened.

I never get stung and I go without.

Just stay off the porn and Russian sites.

If you do all your searches through something like Yahoo, I believe they will tell you if a website is dangerous.

If something appears to be strange, not the time of the first instance, check your search options for recent new exe files and get ready to look up what they are and delete them.

Most of the virus programs are viruses themselves IMO.
