Obama calling for more infrastructure spending
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vowing to find new ways to stimulate the sputtering economy, President Barack Obama will call for long-term investments in the nation's roads, railways and runways that would cost at least $50 billion.
The infrastructure investments are one part of a package of targeted proposals the White House is expected to announce in hopes of jump-starting the economy ahead of the November election. Obama will outline the infrastructure proposal Monday at a Labor Day event in Milwaukee.
While the proposal calls for investments over six years, the White House said spending would be front-loaded with an initial $50 billion to help create jobs in the near future.
The goals of the infrastructure plan include: rebuilding 150,000 miles of roads; constructing and maintaining 4,000 miles of railways, enough to go coast-to-coast; and rehabilitating or reconstructing 150 miles of airport runways, while also installing a new air navigation system designed to reduce travel times and delays.

Furthermore, today the GOP revealed the small-print details of Barack Obama’s stimulus plan, which is supposed to rescue us from the economic crisis. The plan is filled with a staggering amount of waste. We will be adding billions to our national deficit so we can fund such fine programs as:
• $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.
• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.
• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).
• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.
• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.
• $75 million for “smoking cessation activities.”
• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.
• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.
• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.
• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.
• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into “green” buildings.
• $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.
• $1.2 billion for “youth activities,” including youth summer job programs.
• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.
• $160 million for “paid volunteers” at the Corporation for National and Community Service.
• $5.5 million for “energy efficiency initiatives” at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.
• $850 million for Amtrak.
• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.
• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.
• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.
Will reducing lead-based paint stimulate our economy? Will inspecting canals in our urban areas create jobs?
Support for the stimulus plan appears to be fading fast. As we reported here, many believe that the stimulus plan won’t reach American taxpayers until it’s too late to create any real jobs. Meanwhile, our federal employees will have some nice Priuses to drive around in.

Government can only spend. It has no money of its own to “invest”. It either prints money or taxes it away from its owners. One of these days, and soon, that little economic truth is going to become rather obvious, perhaps except to the ideologues and kleptocrats who are currently running Washington and our nation into the ground.
Didn’t we hear all this about infrastructure and “shovel- ready jobs” in Feb. ‘09, as BO lied to get his $850 Billion failed stimulus bill passed?
The only thing that should be shovel-ready now is the Democrat Party.
If he took this 50 whatever and went in with India to co-develop (if they matched it) a "Thorium Nuclear Reactor" that is functional, has a base design that can be replicated in a turnkey fashion it would make sense.
If he did this in the future history books would note him for this brilliant forward thinking move that changed us to energy independence.
The problem is Obama probably thinks Thorium is a comic strip character....

Had they spent it on Nuclear Power, Natural Gas Conversions of our Big Rig Fleet, Coal to JP4 via the Fisher Tropsch process for our Airliners and Military Aircraft, we would have held our nose and said yes because in 10 years we could have told the Saudi's to stuff it.
What a missed opportunity to change our energy situation and our balance of trade.
