This is a short clip from Japanese TV.

Either it reflects a lack of industriousness from the Japanese reporters and editors on the scene in Washington to get the story straight, or it shows a propensity to rely upon the US mainstream media and liberal elites for slant and backgrounder on this major D.C. event.

The key points of the Japanese voice-over analysis by the report are as follows (in italics):

a) Right wing US TV host Glenn Beck held an anti-Obama rally in Washington; there are differing (conflicting) estimates of turnout from between tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands in attendance.

b) But the one thing that really stood out is this: the crowd was overwhelmingly White.

c) The person who called for the rally was the popular news anchor for the Conservative US TV network Fox, who is known for calling Obama a racist towards White people.

d) *(Note here, TBS/JNN cleverly butcher and splice Beck's comments with a short snippet out-of-context right the heels of this "race card" story lead-in positioning, which, along with the sub-title, necessarily could be mistaken by average Japanese viewing as a veiled attack upon non-Whites) (my take)

e) Former VP Candidate Sarah Palin then appears with another sound bite, followed by:

f) (quote) "Because such a rally was held at the very same place as Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" rally, a thousand or so African-Americans gathered to protest the Beck event, and were extremely reactive against it." (Shows Sharpton, et. al., walking slowly, but goes in tight to avoid showing how small a turnout it was).

The news clip cleverly ends with a Pew Research statistics on the screen with comment that shows the overwhelming support of Obama by Black Americans, whereas the majority of White Americans are now opposed to Obama.

"And now that America is moving toward the mid-term elections, the big gap between the races has become apparant." (sic)

Perhaps the "race card" tinge to this reporting can best be summed up in an English summary of the Japanese tag to the YouTubeJapan video itself: アメリカのキング牧師が人種間の融和を訴えた演説から47年目を迎えた28日、演説が行われたのと同じ場所でアメリカの保守系の団体がオバマ政権を批判する大規模な集会を開きました。 ("On the 28th, which represented the 47th anniversary of Dr. King appealing for peace among the races in his speech, at the very same place, a large anti-Obama event was held by American conservative organization(s).")

And, I guess the reporting had its desired effect. Already one Japanese person I know here in Tokyo who saw the report--before I did, said with concern "it appears as if there are going to be race riots in the USA, gee, I would not want to be there right about now."

This ought to be passed on to Glenn Beck to show the worldwide reach of American Progressive Race-Bait Spin. Gotta hand it to them...

OK, don't all go bashing the Japanese about WWII. ;-)

If anything, bash TBS/JNN networks, or (probably) narrow, propagandistic American Liberaldom which put them up to this.

I doubt conservative Japanese news outlets like Sankei Shimbun would write it this way; by and large, most Japanese have lost faith in Obama to begin with, and nothing over race, just mere incompetence and arrogance, not to mention Obama insulting their country in person and from afar on multiple occasions.

As Beck pointed out, NO ONE mentioned the three commendations he awarded (one for each category of Faith, Hope and Charity). And they totally missed the essence of his speech!

FYI, the Daily Caller has recapped how our media chacterized the rally (note “predominately white” predominates!): http://dailycaller.com/2010/08/29/what-theyre-saying-about-the-828-rally/

Asking bloggers and what not here, if you spread this story, kindly a) link to this FR thread URL; and b) credit “FreeRepublic” and “AiT” and refrain from passing this off as your own discovery and/or translation. Thanks.
With that request in mind, viralize at will. ;-)

That's a funny criticism, coming from one of the world's most ethnically heterogeneous populations.

Like I said, leave it to TBS/JNN to write it this way. Sankei News, on the other hand, would write this (I am sure) as a total grassroots counter reaction to abject Socialism which the American People have just about had their fill of. That's how it would be written.

As different as MSNBC vs. Fox.

How many Chinese live in Japan and hold public offices?

Hsieh Lien-fang has a Japanese cabinet position (although now a Japanese citizen). I doubt there are many that hold office (Japanese citizenship required), although non-Japanese citizens with permanent residence can vote in some local municipal elections.

There are ALL KINDS of Chinese these day here in Japan (legal as well as illegal, behaving as well as misbehaving). In terms of business, there are Chinese more and more in responsible positions in Japanese businesses, often fluent in Japanese and often young (many from Dalian, Beijing, Shanghai), those kinds of places. One sees them with increased frequency. LINK One sees many more Indians here, too, in software tech and even management positions in Japanese firms. This was unthinkeable even 10 years ago.

b) But the one thing that really stood out is this: the crowd was overwhelmingly White.
And what’s more, every single crowd I have ever seen in Japan was overwhelmingly Yellow. It is one of the big mysteries of the universe!

Yes! This is really strange: Conservatives and right-wingers differ greatly w.r.t. their thinking and attitudes over different countries and cultures. But not the leftists: They are exactly the same, everywhere!
