Not only did a lot of people show up at the Lincoln Memorial and around the reflecting pool on Saturday, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s famed “I have a dream speech”, but the mainstream media drew criticism for reporting the obvious. They were mostly white.
Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention in the weeks leading up to the event, but I assumed Glenn Beck was going to use the platform to call attention to the key issues with which the nation is struggling and which will influence the outcome of the forthcoming November midterm elections. Obviously I was wrong.
I have been to an evangelical tent meeting. I actually met the late Oral Roberts long ago in Columbus, Georgia where he invited me to attend. I can still recall the fervor of that evening and I was reminded of it while watching Beck.
There was a lot of talk of God, but I don’t recall that Dr. King, a preacher of astonishing power, was preaching Christ Jesus that day forty-seven years ago. King focused on the problem that had been troubling the soul of America since the days of the Revolution, the days of the Civil War, the Reconstruction, and the hundred years that had passed since then.
He has got to either stop with the fake crying or get a hellava better at it. He did it one day last week and I had to turn the radio dial before I threw up.

It's not at all rare, and actually quite easily explained.
These are the people who rebel mightily against God's supreme authority over them, who know (despite what they say) that He exists, and who are absolutely terrified of what He has in store for them when finally their tormented souls depart this mortal coil.
In the meanwhile, they choose to console themselves with dismissive bravado not entirely unlike "whistling past the graveyard..." or, fire pit, as the case may be.

I have no problem with a man crying, and I don’t think it’s fake (GWB used to cry about certain things like the sacrifice of servicemen, etc.) My dad was/is a crier. There are certain subjects that you get him talking about, family, God, country...and he tears up, his voice cracks. (He’s 84, btw.) As long as I can remember he’s always been that way. He’s not fake, and he’s really not an emotional guy...until you get him talking about things he feels deeply about.
Once again, I’ve listened to Beck since he was our local radio guy in 2000. Nothing’s changed, he used to cry then. Only thing that’s changed is the size of his audience.
I’ve also listened to Beck’s show since it first aired nationally aroudn 9/11. I’ve heard him “cry” many times over the years. It’s pure made up drama. I’ve seen men cry. I’ve even seen gay men cry. Glenn’s crying is in a category all it’s own. It’s just bad drama.

Yeah, but the crying did increase to a peak 2-3 years ago. Then Pat and Stu started sitting in more and started making fun of him for the weeping. His sobbing has decreased since then.
I don’t think he fakes his weeping, but could fake it if he wanted to, the guy is a radio genius.

His explanation to Wallace yesterday was clear and concise -- he didn't cry in earlier years, after he sobered up and stop being a self-described "dirt bag" he turned mushy inside, his word for the feeling. He's a changed man from what he was, and I see nothing wrong with the idea that he feels deeply some of the truly important, profound things in this country, in life.
Your experience with your father is why you can understand what so many incorrectly, some purposely insultingly characterize as fake from Glenn. Thanks for your post.
My Dad is just like yours. I think Beck really feels deeply about some things.
He probably has done more to wake people up than anyone else I can think of.
He has connected all the dots so that people have been able to understand and see the conspiracy of the communist democrats.
You know, I have to agree. I'm not a Beck fan. I can't stand to watch him more than 5 minutes before I start the dry heaves. That being said, I absolutely commend him for Saturday's rally. Imperfect as he is, I think God performed a mighty work through him on that day.

Very well said! When you are a Republican or Democrat in office you should be serving “all”, not just the Party. What’s been going on lately is rather disgusting. Obama is the first President I’ve heard continually trash the other party and it’s constituants. Seems everytime he opens his mouth hateful $h!t pours out, which would explain why the flies are so attracted to him.

I am shocked to find myself here defending AA people. Perhaps I don't have enough experience as I have only attended Al Anon meetings to encourage a friend to take advantage of this resource, but I happily participated and found value for myself despite the misfit of Alcohol not being a central issue for my own troubles and my connection to Alcoholism coming only through this friend's very troubled family.
But, ultimately AA is not about poor me.. its about finding a backbone and for Al Anon people its often about learning to say no. To say, "suffer until you are tired of it." pretty darn conservative message if you ask me.
AA is good stuff. Bing on it if you like but these folks who say reason your way out of dependency are fools and have been proven as such many times over.
The message at the Rally is similar as charged to the AA message, that you have to change yourself to change what is going on around you and that when you need courage God is a great source. Beck on this point is on the money.
Faith is really the only source that can assure that we will find the way to clean up this mess. A generation or more of feral children is coming of age and they are bereft of values and morals and faith and yet this is the very thing they need most. When folks have their own moral compass you don't have to spend so much time worrying about how much trouble they are getting into, but rather get out of their way as they make good lives for themselves and those around them.
Faith in God and a good sense of values are the most important tools that you could equip a society with to overcome what we are facing.

If AA works for folks good!
I am not one for any group support where personal info is shared...I have attended other types of support groups and it just wasn’t my thing.
I have other ways to keep my chin up in stressful times.
But hey that’s just me, I like to travel/play alone too.
Not much into any group type of thing and even tourist group stuff.
I enjoy (probably because my daily life is heavy in communication/social interaction) alone time to pray/reflect and take a good look at self.
But I am not knocking group therapy for those who do find support.
I am not sure what AA’s message is but if that is where Beck is coming from then Okay.
What we enjoyed was we agreed with his message as it is one we live by...always have been graced by God to know about self responsibility ect...(I have to admit I do get wild and take off the Jeep roof from time to time)
We enjoy Beck and Alan Keyes because we have for the past 30 plus years lived by the same message they preach.

We had a family friend who was a Baptist Preacher and watching Beck was just like seeing our now gone to heaven friend Preach.
We enjoyed it as it gave us time to reflect and think about our friend and another freind who are no longer of this earth.
As a woman I don’t cry (except going thruough meno I would give Beck a run for the money/tears) and those I know who cry easily think I am cold or odd.
Just not my way, but I feel things very deep into the soul. The acid in my stomach that releases is equal to those who drip tears.
AA isn't an answer for everything, or even most things. It provides answers for folks who are fighting one awful thing.
There are broader universal solutions and values that people learn as part of the process that others like you may already already know.
But, typically the disclosures that people make in AA meetings are for themselves, to put words to things they have a problem saying to themselves. Everyone else doesn't really care about all of these details, but they provide support and listen and ask questions and help that individual get a clearer understanding of what they are thinking.
It all seems whiny and navel gazing like but it works and has a record of being more effective than therapists in its place, and its a whole lot cheaper.
So, questioning Mr. Beck’s behaviour renders one a troll, as does postulating that the same challenges that led Mr. Beck to become an alcoholic could also lead him to other problem behaviours? That causes a person to be branded a troll?
