Obama bans over 100,000 (old) rifles

According to The Korea Times, the Obama administration has blocked efforts by the South Korean government to sell over a hundred thousand surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market. These self-loading were rifles introduced in 1926 and 1941. As rifles, they are especially well-suited to community defense in an emergency, as in the cases of community defense following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Along with AR-15 type rifles, the M1 rifles are the quintessential firearms of responsible citizenship, precisely the type of firearms which civic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project teach people how to use.

According to a South Korean official, “The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions.”

Cute, yes. Accurate, no. And how can you call an M1 Carbine a weapon? It was specifically designed to wound opponents, not kill them.

I carried one in combat...and it wasn't to wound...tell you what...let me shoot you at 50 yards and then you figure out it's accuracy and lethality!

"...The Soviet Mosin-Nagant 91/30 is a prime example, and can still be had as an arsenal refurb for under $100..."
Just got one from Cabela's. $99.95. Built in 1943. Came with a hardly-used bayonet that, when attached, makes the total length about 5.5 feet. Taller than my wife!

Under a lame duck congress post-November, you think we’ll see another assault weapons ban?

I doublt it. We actually have the "will of the people" on our side. That is why obama did this unilaterally. He'd never get it through Congress. It's a 3rd rail issue with them. The One doesn't care what the people think.

“The M-1 is the one rifle I’d stake my life on.”

While basically the same rifle, I would take issue with your statement, but to each his own......

the advantages of a box magazine over the en bloc clip are huge, as is the ability to recharge the magazine while it is in the rifle. Not having the rifle signal to the enemy that you are empty as the M-1 does when it eject the en-bloc clip “ping!” is another M-14 advantage......no more M-1 thumb! lololol

With both of us being former Marines, we realize that combat sights (battle sights) are recommended to be set at 300 yds. although most often we are engaged at far shorter ranges. The balistic differences between the 30-06 and the NATO 7,62 x 51 are negligible.

http://www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html

I shot a perfect score at Stumps using a M-14 on the “charlie” targets during requal. I did not find it difficult hitting the 1/2 man Silhouettes at 500 yds. Course thats just paper, and they don’t shoot back!

Marine snipers have used the 7.62 round to great effect at longer ranges, although I understand that .338 magnums or something similiar in bolt guns are de rigor now.

For me, as stated before, the M-14 is the one I trust to keep me ticking! Modern Marines are now rediscovering the M-14 and are carrying them in combat again...that is as high praise as you can find!

No matter what weapon is used, gaining fire superiority through accurate, overwhelming riflery is key to combat success. Marines of all eras, using many different weapons, have proves that time and time again......

“Qualified with both in the Marines. While the M-14 MAY be better at short range, it looses at 500 yds or greater.”

Accuracy: .30-06 vrs 7.62 NATO

From the article: “When the M14 was first used, there were some .30-06 M1 rifles that would shoot more accurately.” I must have been in that first group (July 1962)

"I carried one in combat...and it wasn't to wound...tell you what...let me shoot you at 50 yards and then you figure out it's accuracy and lethality!"

The issue is not whether the recipient of a Carbine bullet will die, but when he will die. My cousin shot one of Germany's finest three times with his Carbine but took a round from a 7.9 Mauser before the Kraut died. He cussed until he died a year ago about not being issued an M1 Garand that would have finished the task on the first round.

I wouldn't want to be hit with a 22 Long Rifle at 50 yards, but there is a good chance that I'd kill the fool before he got off a second shot.

Also, I'm from the old school that believes only an accurate rifle is interesting.

I was issued an M16A1 in Vietnam but usually carried a Thompson Submachine Gun without it's buttstock attached which was better suited for my particular circumstances. But that is another story.

Thank you for serving.

The M1 Carbine was never really intended for issue to front line combat troops as I'm sure you're aware. It was for issue to Officers, clerks, truck drivers, cooks, etc.

While it would be a handly little rifle to keep around the house for home defense if one fed it decent hollow point ammunition it certainly not in the same league as an M-1 or M-14, not even close.

That being said, they're a heck of a lot of fun to shoot.

Thank you for serving as well....the carbine fit in the cockpit quite well.....and for an Aviator who was adverse to the ground with the exception of the dirt between his quarters and the O club...the carbine worked fine...

Yeah, that's another little set of goodies that I got, gratis. The bayonet, canvas sling, dual oil/solvent can, cleaning tools, and dual ammo pouch. I got mine through J&G, standard arsenal refurb (a '31 Tula), for 80 stinkin' bucks, and the serial numbers even match. Check on eBay, and you can usually find packs of stripper clips that only cost about a buck per clip. Highly recommended, and so cheap that you don't get upset if one or two get bunged up during use. And if you're of small stature or have a bum shoulder, I'd invest in a recoil pad. Those big rimfire loads like to make an exit with great fanfare.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

“I must have been in that first group (July 1962)”

Sounds like it!

When I first fired an M-16 on the 1,000 inch range I amazed the PMI spotters by putting all 10 rounds through the same hole.....it drew a crowd of campaign hats to watch my shooting....Lolololol.....I have good eyesight and even now in my sixties do not need glasses to read or whatever.....lucky!

By the way my next rifle will be a M-1....... though I wish I could find one in 7.62 NATO....

Obama bans over 100,000 (old) rifles

I guess Obama got an e-mail from CongressCritter Maxine Waters.
Probably along the lines that “it’s not safe for more Americans
to own guns.”.

RE: Waters opined on the floor of the House that the reason for the Second
Amendment was that people should have the right to firearms so that
(in so many words) they could go hunting animals.
Rep. “B-1” Bob Dornan angrily stepped up the microphone and informed
Waters that The Second Amendment was written so that the citizens,
if necessary, could come to Washington, D.C. and clear out corrupt/traitorous politicians!

How many M1s have figured in crimes over the last 60 years?

I’m not omnipresent/omniscent...
I’ve only heard of one incident in which a Garand was used in a criminal act.
It’s been maybe a decade or more...but I think some poor soul went
“a little off in the head” and fired an M-1 off in his neighborhood.
IIRC, it was in Texas (DFW area?), but I don’t think anyone else was injured.

Sorry I can’t recall if the fate of the shooter (apprehended, shot by
police, committed suicide).

On a personal note...
What I can tell you is that I was shocked to see a guy carrying an
M-1 on the “south campus” of UCLA on a Saturday morning about a
decade ago.

I approched the fellow and said “Is that a Garand?” and he repsonded that
it was...and that he was on his way to the shooting club on campus.
(believe it or not, UCLA did have a shooting club.)

He let me handle/inspect the Garand; he said it was Korean War vintage.
