According to The Korea Times, the Obama administration has blocked efforts by the South Korean government to sell over a hundred thousand surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market. These self-loading were rifles introduced in 1926 and 1941. As rifles, they are especially well-suited to community defense in an emergency, as in the cases of community defense following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Along with AR-15 type rifles, the M1 rifles are the quintessential firearms of responsible citizenship, precisely the type of firearms which civic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project teach people how to use.
According to a South Korean official, The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions.

I also have a Rockola, original, everything but the trigger guard is Rockola; trigger guard is Underwood. No bayonet, but the lug is there. Every time I take that out at the range, folks want to hold it. A few actually want to shoot it. Once they run a 15 round mag through it, they want to buy it! I'm on the verge of selling it ... I really don't need to own a $2000 rifle. But yeah, these are sweet shootin' little rifles. Close quarters combat rifles to replace the 1911 .45 is what they were designed for, and they do just fine in that regard.
Forgot to add that I painted the new stock on the universal ... black. Bwahahahaha, just to drive liberals crazy about the ‘evil black assault rifles’. It does look good that way though
You have the same two as me.
Be careful the universal can shoot out of breach.
That was my first firearm. Its a good shooter.
Silly Kartographer! Ak74s dont work underwater.
“First they came for the guns...”
It was shark week and I was nervous. ;-)
Do you know if it happens when the rifle is in need of a thorough cleaning? I keep my weapons very clean and lubed ... well, I used to, before I sold them all to that guy whose name escapes me now.
I wonder if the hammer/firing pin shape could have something to do with it? Maybe the open side on the slide? Anyway, I really enjoy shooting the little rascal. I shoot dandelion puffs at 100 yards and beyond when they're in season.
BTW, I replaced the Universal bolt parts with all Iver Johnson heat treated parts.
All I know is that if I hold the breach open and pull the trigger it goes “click”
I’d have to put an empty case with a primer in there to see if the firing pin actually hits the primer out of breach.
That would be very bad.
I have been shooting the thing since 83 and it aint blowed up yet, but I thought I had best mention it to you.
Numrich has all the gun parts you’d want
That’s whom I order through all the time. I do conversions, mostly on Marlin, Ruger, and one Mossberg .22 rifles. I also added ‘things’ to pistols and shotguns.
Numrich keeps all my old stuff alive
“We both came out of it unscathed but all the contents of the boat was lost in that spring fed 500’ deep mine pit full of water. ; )”
Thats funny....same thing happened to me?????
It's civilian now, and they're not even getting the rifles from the feds anymore, so what's he gonna do? Not much unless he bans rifles outright (which of course he'd love to).
“FWIW Ill take the M-14/M1A over the M-1 hands down......”
Qualified with both in the Marines. While the M-14 MAY be better at short range, it looses at 500 yds or greater. BTW, my scores in rapid fire weren’t much different; standing was better with the M-14; but prone at 500 yds. the M-1 was the better rifle.
The M-1 is the one rifle I’d stake my life on.
I carried one in combat...and it wasn't to wound...tell you what...let me shoot you at 50 yards and then you figure out it's accuracy and lethality!
