According to The Korea Times, the Obama administration has blocked efforts by the South Korean government to sell over a hundred thousand surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market. These self-loading were rifles introduced in 1926 and 1941. As rifles, they are especially well-suited to community defense in an emergency, as in the cases of community defense following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Along with AR-15 type rifles, the M1 rifles are the quintessential firearms of responsible citizenship, precisely the type of firearms which civic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project teach people how to use.
According to a South Korean official, The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions.

I sure wish I had one of those!
I suppose ye olde FN/FAL will have to do.
The M-1 is too heavy for the lazy pants down thugs to tote...not to mention most of them are too stupid to figure out how to reload without losing a finger....now the carbine is another matter...sweet little weapon..
Poor baby...LOL!
Under a lame duck congress post-November, you think we’ll see another assault weapons ban?
Note to self...Obama and family seem to be taking advantage of vacation travel on the government debt in a rapid fire sort of way.
Perhaps the family is wise to coming events?
Yep, beginning in 2013.
They wouldn’t happen to have a few Thompsons lying around too, would they?
yeah and the 30-06 Springfield cartridge will make the homy boys cry out its too big of a kick.
The M1 is excellent for rural home defense, and for hunting as well, it will drop every N. American animal worth eating.
Now my choice being a slightly more modern version is the M1A with its .308 my personal favorite.
Its a mans gun from the days of making every round count and not this prat and spray stuff.
And this surprises...Who?
There are still M1’s that can be purchased in the states. Most gun shows have vendors that are still selling them. What this tur* has done is caused the price of one to increase.
I pray that this joke is a one termer!!!
Greece had a big sale of M-1 Garands just about a year ago, and was fetching $500 a copy for mostly unfired, or fired very little weapons, many still in the original packaging. I recall some fellow posting pictures of the one he got for five hundred bucks when mint condition Garands were easily fetching a Grand or so a copy.
I hope these hit the market all at once and drive the prices way down. It would be nice to have one of these in the closet, not necessarily for me, but for the guy next door who shows up empty handed when TSHTF...
These all fire 30.06 Winchester, correct??
“In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised - General George S. Patton, Jr.
“In my opinion, the M1A is the greatest battle implement ever devised” - EGPWS /snicker”
You do realize tht the M-1A (M-14) is an updated version of the M-1? The M14 cures the en bloc clip problem, uses the more modern version of the 30-06 cartridge, thereby providing the same firepower in a lighter cartridge housed in a larger capacity, quickly exchanged magazine, in the same overall package.....John Gerand was a consultant on the M=1 / M-14 redesign team......
FWIW I’ll take the M-14/M1A over the M-1 hands down......
Nope, don't know nuthin' about no M-14, nope, all I know is someone I was a fishin' with said somethin' about an M1A he was totin' and he panicked and screamed about losin' it when the boat flipped over.
We both came out of it unscathed but all the contents of the boat was lost in that spring fed 500' deep mine pit full of water. ; )
Obamao will do everything he can to keep Americans from resisting the commie/Islamic takeover.
I have two friends who have Garands...we took em down to the firing range and all three of us blazed away...it as great!
WooHoo!
