I need help with saving a scanned document from an email to a Word document.
I have received some scanned documents attached to an email. I need to transfer these to a Word file so that I can, in turn, attach them to the grant application which can only be completed on-line, via "browse/add."
When I attempted to save the scanned document from the author of the email, all I ended up with in the Word folder was the link to the email itself, not the document.
Can anyone give me instructions about what I'm doing wrong?

What is the extention of the file?
Just insert as an object. You should also be able to open the image and do a cut-n-paste into word.
Two questions: what’s your email client, and what format are they currently in, that is, what are the attachments currently?
Save it as a .jpg(or whatever you like. Copy it.
Open MS Word, and paste. The image will then be pasted into the document. Or you can drag/drop I think.
Then when you fire up Word, do file>open. In the lower left you will see a dropdown menu that has a choice "recover text in any format" or something like that.
Try that. It's worked for me for numerous odd files. If it's scanned text, you may have to do some fixing or maybe text recognition scanners have improved since I last tried that.
If that doesn't work, check the file extension of the files you were emailed and get back to the board, and maybe someone else can help. I don't go out and dl any old apps from the internet, but sometimes it offers to search for one for you.
View them in the email and then right click and save picture to a folder (just in case you need them later while off-line). In Word I would first open a text box and then insert the image into it.

Try to right click on the image, select copy, then make the word document active, right click on/within the document where you want it and choose paste. Should drop it in there.
I do that often with Wordpad, load images in a text document. So if it's not working, in Word, try Wordpad. Also if you have the internet link to to the images, you can copy and paste them off the web like I explained, often do that.
Sorry I didn't think until after I posted that it might be a scanned image, and fortunately it's .jpg.
If you know how to use Windows Explorer, you can navigate to the saved images and see thumbnails of them to make sure what you've got. I've enhanced my windows explorer to include RAW files, .CR2 format; if I double click on the thumbnail it will display larger. I know, more than you wanted to know.
Assume you have a Win OS since you have Word.
You should be able to right click, choose COPY, then paste into your WORD document, or PASTE SPECIAL into the document
otherwise, save the graphic and insert it as a picture
The document is a jpg attachment.
Not having any luck doing a cut and paste with the scanned document.
And I must be doing something else wrong because I can’t move it into a Word document as a picture when I right click on the scanned document.
Yes, we have a Win OS. I’ve used WordPerfect for about a zillion years and am just getting used to Word.
My problem is this is an IRS letter determining a 501 c 3 status for an organization that I’m trying to get a foundation grant for and the deadline is tomorrow.
It’s an interactive program and so I can’t just attach the IRS letter.
Grrrr
If it's another email client or another version of Word, those buttons will be different but the actions will be the same.
What you have is a "picture" of the text, not editable text. You should be able to "insert" it as a picture (file_name.JPG) into your word document. If you want the actual text it will be necessary to rescan the originals after selecting "editable text" (or similar) as the destination format. As someone has pointed out some cleanup of the text is usually required but generally much less work then retyping the entire source document.
I use a HP flatbed scanner and the text output is directly into a "word" document. If scanning typewritten originals the output is close to 100% accurate. Scanning newsprint yields lower (85% - 95%) accuracy. Books and magazines are better then newsprint but not as good as original documents.

Use OCR, then carefully proofread and edit.
If you have any sort of fax program, it should have an OCR feature.
Try this:
1. Save the JPG attachment to a folder on your drive as a JPG file.
2. Place the cursor in the Word doc where you want the JPG to be.
3. Depending on your version of Word, do one of the following steps:
* In Word 2003, select Insert > Picture > From File.
* In Word 2007 or 2010, select Insert > Picture.
4. Select the JPG file in the dialog box.
Open the scanned image.
Right clic on the image
Choose copy
Open your word document
Place your curser where you want the document
Right click and chose paste
Like some else said, you can import it as an object.
I understand. Try Wordpad if you can't get it to work in Word. WP is much simpler and yet versatile just doesn't have a spell checker and expanded features of Word.
Let us know if you're successful.
A scanned document is no longer a document but an image and you must treat it as an object when transferring it to word.
