I always have over $10,000 cash on hand.
It's definitely worth it. I'd drive a long way for the service I get from my local bank.
Part of the difference in service is that, in a small town, the bank employees are probably your neighbors. In a big city, that doesn't happen. When a national bank comes to a small town, they bring that attitude of anonymity and rudeness with them.
I always reply, May I see the law? After stumbling around like a fool, it generally comes out that its a corporate regulation for customers.
Actually it's for non-customers, but you're right -- it's corporate policy. If I ever run into that again, I'll challenge them to show me the law.
No matter how much cash, PMs, guns, ammo, food, water, gasoline and diesel I have stockpiled, my 5 cord rick of seasoned oak, ash and hickory bring me the greatest pleasure. I'm probably nuts, but snoozing next to a hot wood stove, fed by the efforts of my own sweat, on a windy 5 degree January night is about as close to Heaven on Earth as one can get.
I usually fall asleep with the vision of Omar Sharif in Dr. Zhivago trudging across the windswept, snowy Russian tundra with ice in his beard.
Sorry for the rant.
Funny how a little cash under your mattress makes it easier to sleep better at night. ;)
Sounds like you're doing a good job on keeping your vehicle's gas tank full already. Most people run around between a 1/2 a tank and empty.
Think about a little cache of pre 1965 American silver coins from www.apmex.com if you don't have any already.
For sure!
I agree and that is what I have as well. They know us personally and go out of their way to help us. Many things are free like notary service.
My 3 kids have developed a keen sense of knowing whenever Dad has any extra cash.
Having said all that, I just reactivated my account at the local credit union, far from the prying eyes of wifey and the kids. My plan is to put $100 each pay period, and build it to the point that I can treat it as a secured credit card/emergency fund.
I totally agree if it is legal in your area and you have the common sense and storage facility to store gasoline. A lot of people can't meet all of the above requirements though.
I went through two major hurricanes and the first thing to go are gasoline containers. Shortly thereafter, the stations start running out of gas. Having containers puts you safely ahead of the game. The same works for water. I have a 55 gal drum made of food grade plastic that I keep on hand ready to fill in an emergency. I also have a water filter with a pump and access to a lake if the emergency happens before I can get the barrel filled.
You won't even notice that in fairly short order you've saved a rather substantial pile of cash.
Keep as much as you feel comfortable with and you should think about keeping at least some 90% silver coinage on hand in case the Chinese wake up one morning and declare the dollar worthless.
If the banks are closed, people will not be traveling as much so you made not need to spend as much for a given period (i.e. a month). Of course if you have to tend to something that demands your attention then your expenditures will be the same or higher.
Happens to me all the time. At least that's what the e-mails I keep getting from diverse banks say. Apparently there's a solution. I just have to confirm my banking details and access will be granted (to somebody).
I don't use on-line banking
It also makes a tasty stew or chili when your fireplace or stove is equipped to do so.
Kinda hard for me to remember where my money is at...Moved the furniture in my bedroom this spring and found 620 dollars under the bed. Not the first time I found money in the house....when I die, the kids will have to go on a treasure hunt......
I have one account with BOA that’s had problems like this periodically. Luckily, it’s not my main bank account.
On a different note, I deposited a $4,000 check one day in this BOA account. I logged on later that night and saw the teller had entered it as $400,000.
I actually thought about running to the bank to take out some money. But, I knew I wouldn’t be forgiven for my mistake.
I have taken your advice in recent years, but that’s all I’ll say.
My wife, from Asia, wonders why I do things like this.
I just have a hard time explaining it because she doesn’t know our politics.
ping.
Been advocating to everyone to keep $500 at home. Should there be a national banking emergency or should you lose your debit card, you will have no money till it gets fixed.
I suggest you keep the cash outside the house ... the house could burn down.
