The DISCLOSE Act is being debated in the US Senate, with the Democrats as yet unable to break a filibuster. In short, the DISCLOSE Act would prohibit people and groups from speaking against Democrats and Liberals before an election. Democrat favorites, like the thugish labor unions (SEIU, teachers unions) would be exempt.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) has lately begun identifying itself as a civil rights group, as they believe the right to defend yourself or your family is the most basic of civil rights. This is a hard argument to lose. If we cant keep someone else from killing us or our families, can we enjoy any civil rights? This writer has long been an NRA member but may now quit the group.
I am very disappointed to learn that the NRA backs the unconstitutional DISCLOSE Act in return for being exempted from the bills restraints. The NRAs support for Senator Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, is just icing on the cake. Reid may be a luke-warm supporter of the right to own rifles, but he has spent a career cursing gun owners and pushing to make handguns illegal.
In all, this behavior by the NRA indicates that the organization has abandoned its support of the Bill of Rights, especially the First Amendment, freedom of speech, and may now become part of the problem. The most likely explanation is expediency; that freedom for the moment to be able to speak freely is worth losing that right, and indeed the entire organization, in the long run. But as Ben Franklin is famously quoted as saying: They that would sacrifice an essential liberty for a momentary security deserve neither liberty nor security.
Until the NRA explains itself convincingly, I assert that the organization is selling its soul to the Devil and in doing so, betraying the 70,000,000 lawful gun owners in the United States.
Equal before the law has taken on new meaning with the jug eared jackass.
I have to say, I have had my suspicions about the NRA for a long time. The Second Amendment was their fund-raising tool ....
With so many out there willing, or wanting to take down the NRA for multiple reasons, I’m taking a wait for the explanation of the action, and see direction.
Once the NRA comes out with their reasoning for their action, then I will assess my over twenty year relationship with them.
Garbage In, Garbage Out...
Life member for 15 years or so...
I called NRA when this news turned up and let them know I did not approve. The guy on the other end said I was not the first to call but was among the few that had been civil.
Not making deals with those who would destroy our 1st Amendment rights.
All 10 of the Bill of Rights stand together
Yep, just like many of the Churches, local GOP and so-called conservative talking heads, we’ve been infiltrated and the only way to resolve it is by taking back the NRA and voting out the RATS.
I just cancelled my NRA membership yesterday, and I’ve convinced about two dozen people to do the same since then. Total doucebaggery on the NRA’s part, and I hope they die a slow, agonizing death.
Coxucker.
“NRA backs the unconstitutional DISCLOSE Act in return for being exempted from the bills restraints”
I believe they agreed not to oppose the bill, not that they were in favor of it (equivalent to a president not vetoing a bill but not signing it either thereby allowing it to become law). Stupid move, either way, but as I noted in an earlier post, their argument is that they are a one issue organization IAW an editorial by Chris Cox in the latest American Rifleman. They will definitely feel the heat from members over this and the potential endorsement of Reid.
I dropped my NRA membership because of the groups willingness to make a deal with the devil in DC and sell out the American people. Three separate emails were sent to NRA members for the purpose of explaining the groups position and reasoning on the Disclose act betrayal. THREE!! In other words, the NRA heard form countless members, indignant over it’s disgraceful behavior. And now, the organization is supporting HARRY REID because of his sterling record on the 2nd amendment!!! And yeah, it’s THAT HARRY REID...the one who voted in favor of the Brady Bill!!! I’ve no idea how many NRA members have refused to renew their membership. Perhaps I’m the only one. But I certainly wouldn’t BET on it.
“I hope they die a slow, agonizing death.
Changing the leadership is a more appropriate path. Just quitting the outfit in protest is less effective but does send a message.
If they died tomorrow, there would be no group to fill the void with the power and influence they have had historically - GOA, SAF, and SAS are not known by >90% of the public, probably including a fair amount of gun owners. The equivalence here is changing the leadership of the GOP to “real conservatives.” not hoping that the GOP “die a slow agonizing death.”
You need to think out the potential negative consequential results if such statements became true prior to making them.
Ben Franklin is famously quoted as saying: They that would sacrifice an essential liberty for a momentary security deserve neither liberty nor security. AND I add, they deserve the same agonizing death, as the masters they have chosen to serve.....
“You are either with us or against us”- President Bush 2001.
You are far from being the only one, my FRiend. To hell with them.
They called our office yesterday asking for my husband. I took the call instead and gave the guy a nice refusal to renew. Told him why. He actually had the nerve to ask if I would just give a donation instead. I laughed at him.
Good for you! Hooo-rah.
I don’t have any civil rights, my rights are inalienable.
The NRA dropped its pants in 1968, and have been ankle grabbers ever since.
They do not support a personal right to hand guns unless you are a member of the elite. They were forced into the DC case by other gun rights orgs, and they tried hard to keep it from going to the SCOTUS.
They are the handgun owner’s worst enemy.

“Rather, we need to do what was done roughly 25 or 30 years ago in a similar crisis of the soul: CLEAN HOUSE AND GET RID OF THE LIBS.”
.
How do you propose to do that?
The NRA’s charter gives all control to the nominating committee in selecting directors. They can also expand the board at will.
