Militaryless, democratic, non-conflict-having Costa Rica is the new front in the United States War on Inanimate Objects. The countrys national assembly has given the OK for a veritable US invasion force to enter Costa Rican territory: 7,000 marines on 46 warships, including the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship the USS Makin Island, pictured.
La Nación quotes a document from the US Embassy that states that, The US personnel in Costa Rica will be able to enjoy freedom of movement and the right to carry out the activities that they consider necessary to complete their mission.
Well isnt that just permissively vague.
The legislation says the mission has to do with fighting drug traffickers, as well as a few humanitarian goals, though the humanitarian use of a Harrier jet is still somewhat unclear.
On a casual note, I would point out again that for all the Costa Rican smugness about not having an army, they do a pretty good job of borrowing one when they need it. On a more serious note, because this is bound to be extremely politically unpopular domestically, the government must have a damn good reason for inviting all this firepower in from up north.
My guess is that the government is secretly terrified it is losing control of the security situation. They probably should be.
A proportionally very large amount of cocaine is busted in Costa Rica every year, and the country has become something of a bodega for Mexican and Colombian drug smugglers, what with its good infrastructure, weak judicial system, ill-equipped police force, long coastlines, remote beaches, terrible immigration enforcement, and ample opportunities for laundering money through real estate transactions and layers of shell corporations.
Im not sure how well-armed helicopters will change any of those factors, unless you could make the National Registry more transparent by slipping a few Hellfire missiles through the front door . Probably wouldnt hurt.
Anyway, keep ironing around that wrinkle fellas. Youll win the war on drugs any day now.
Five planes? I know this is all a ruse, but 5 planes just sounds like an insult. What significant effect could 5 planes possible have in a “war zone”?
Thanks for the ping LucyT. I was reading the article as you pinged, and I’m flabbergasted at yet another seemingly flagrant abuse of power by this misAdministration of radical imbeciles.
46 warships!? 7000 Marines!?
If it was any other legitimate Administration other than Obama’s I’d call BS on this article.
We really need to find out more. It’s too preposterous.
Well i don’t think 100 war planes would do anything. But they say will help with humanitarian missions. If your on the higher mountains you can see both coast. Just for perspective of size.
Personally i’m against this action. but the drug smuggling via that country is a serious problem.
As a land owner their i hope my land is used as a base and i get payed a good rent. On the other hand it would destroy my tree harvesting farm.
Won’t Costa Rica like, tip over or something, with that many Marines?
ACORN, SEIU and other Obama/Emanuel thugs will be free to roam.

Well then, how do we explain this.......

Sure sounds like BS to me,,,
Hugo the Fat would be havin’ a fit if this was true,,,
We’ll watch this for more info...
Is Costa Rica at risk of having a fair, democratic election or something?
Given the cuts Barney Frank is proposing, the
remaining forces would be small in number and
easily moved entirely off US soil. The smoldering
question is why the massive downsizing and
disarmament? Is Barry rolling out the red
carpet for a foreign invasion?
So far we have 3 carriers in the Indian ocean and now 46 ships heading for Costa Rica. What is happening here?
What buttercup wrote this piece of junk?
The troops will be housed aboard ship but will be given shore leave without curfew. That will mean about 25 million a month is sex tourism for CR. This is indeed a humanitarian action.
We have drug traffickers in southern Arizona, too. Guess we don't matter.
A little while ago I caught a little snip on Fox,,,
They showed a mini-sub that was built in the jungle
in that general area,,,(used to haul dope),,,
Also that fleet has 200 choppers/etc. ,,,
This could be a search and destroy mission on the druggies.
The Marines could land at a choke-point and assault en-mass.
