The Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is under fire for comments he made about the War in Afghanistan. On a recent Hugh Hewitt radio show both Hewitt and Bill Kristol call for Steele to step down: "I don't know why he said it... or what his condition was when he said it..." (audio)

Again, there are oh so many reasons for him to resign. This is NOT one of them. It is not wrong to doubt Obama’s “leadership” in Afghanistan.

Remember when dissent was patriotic?

There are too many better reasons for him to resign to be harping all over this as if we have repealed the first amendment and made it illegal for the opposition party to oppose.

I’m afraid that Mr. Steele really NEEDS to step down at this point. We must have far better oversight, organization and a CLEAR and STRONG message of principle emanating from the GOP....if they wish to survive.

Before Steele became RNC head, I thought he was pretty sharp. Now I wonder what’s wrong with him.

The time for strong leadership is now. Michael Steele ain’t it. We are going to need someone who will lead an overwhelming charge, because the amount of vote fraud will be unprecedented.

Overall Michael Steele is a solid C+, but his foot in mouth disease has become terminal. Steele is the weakest link! Good bye.

“Here are the comments in question:
Michael Steele discussed the Obama Administration’s prosecution of the war in Afghanistan. “The [General] McChrystal incident, to me, was very comical. I think it’s a reflection of the frustration that a lot of our military leaders has with this Administration and their prosecution of the war in Afghanistan. Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama’s choosing. This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in. It was one of those areas of the total board of foreign policy [that was at least?] that we would be in the background sort of shaping the changes that were necessary in Afghanistan as opposed to directly engaging troops. But it was the President who was trying to be cute by half by flipping a script demonizing Iraq, while saying the battle really should in Afghanistan. Well, if he is such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? Alright, because everyone who has tried over a thousand years of history has failed, and there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan...”

This who thing reads like a third grader wrote it.

I’m not even sure what the heck he is saying!

With Petraeus taking charge, this is the worst time to make this accusation.

Who replaces Steele, if he does step down or is forced out?

One point he’s making is that Obama and his minions said over and over again that Iraq was the wrong war, while Afghanistan was the right war. “We’re not against war, just stupid wars” or some such. That’s a matter of historical record. So, whether Obama’s capable of winning such a war or not, he’s painted himself into the proverbial corner. He will keep the troops fighting just for the sake of his “legacy”. Which strikes me as a shitty thing to expect others to die for.

As far as whether Afghanistan is winnable or not, I doubt that it is. I suspect that’s not going to be a popular opinion; I’ve probably just made my last post.

Steele does sound like an idiot, though, and the RNC would probably be better off without him just on that general principle.
