1000 rounds per weapon is the lowest recommended amount to have on hand at any given moment.
The challenge with “the proper amount” is/are mobility and accessibility. oh ... and cost.
If you intend to defend your sanctuary, in situ, then all that mass and volume (of ammo) is fine, and you can easily secure it.
If you intend to bug out, then ya gotta plan for secure mobile space and its weight.

Although 20 boxes of .45 ACP doesn’t take up much space and isn’t TOO bad of a hit on the wallet. But .223 (and up) can get painful.
All you really need is enough to “liberate” a weapon from your oppressor. In WWII the allies dropped single shot, stamped steel pistols, with two bullets and picture instructions, to the French for just that purpose.
1000? LOL...most won’t bother using six so why would they need 1000?
On top of that, I’m convinced that many freepers would race to see who could throw Henry Bowman under the bus first.
