Gov. Palin endorses Todd Tiahrt in Kansas U.S Senate race
Texas for Sarah Palin ^ | June 24, 2010 at 5:35 PM CDST | Josh Painter

* On Facebook today, Sarah Palin endorsed U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt, GOP candidate for the United States Senate seat currently held by Sam Brownback, who is retiring from that body to run for Gov. of Kansas:

Thank Todd Tiahrt for True Public Service

I’m happy to endorse Todd Tiahrt’s campaign to be the next U.S Senator from Kansas. Todd is a protector of our Constitution, a pro-family, pro-Second Amendment Commonsense Conservative who has never voted for a tax increase and has fought to end the wasteful spending coming out of Washington. He didn’t just stand on the sidelines complacently, but instead actually battled against the bailouts, the debt-ridden stimulus spending, the cap-and-tax energy schemes, and Obamacare. In fact, remember on the day Obamacare was being debated, Todd Tiahrt was on the House floor all day working to defeat it, and he’s helped lead the charge to repeal and replace Obamacare the moment it was signed into law. We can count on Todd to take on the liberal spending agenda of the Obama administration and fight for lower taxes, more individual freedom, and less government intrusion.

Please join me in supporting Todd Tiahrt’s campaign by visiting his website at www.ToddTiahrt.com and following him on Facebook and Twitter.

- Sarah Palin

Tiahrt is the leader of Kansas' U.S. House delegation and sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee. His main opponent in the August 3 GOP primary is another U.S. Congressman, Jerry Moran.

Tiarht on Illegal Immigration:

Immigration Congress must take real and serious steps to stop illegal immigration. The U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency estimates that around 500,000 illegal immigrants successfully enter the U.S. each year. This must come to an end. Our nation can not allow the status quo to continue. Our sovereignty as a nation is at stake.

In January 2010, Rep. Tiahrt along with Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA) introduced the Fairness for American Students Act that would close a loophole in current law that several states have used to provide lower-cost college tuition to illegal immigrants compared to tuition rates U.S. citizens from neighboring states have to pay. Kansas and Nebraska are two of the states that currently offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.

The organizations NumbersUSA and the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) are both supporting the legislation and are pledging to help it move through Congress. The bill is co-sponsored by Duncan D. Hunter (R-Calif.) and Rodney Alexander (R-La.).

The landmark 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act prohibited illegal immigrants from receiving in-state college tuition, but nine states so far have used a loophole allowing them to disregard congressional intent. The Tiahrt/Bilbray bill was written to effectively close the loophole and provide legal standing to U.S. citizens to file civil action against states that violate the law.

Opposed to Amnesty: Tiahrt strongly opposes amnesty. Amnesty will only reward illegal immigrants and encourage others to illegally enter the United States. Being respectful of the rule of law is a critical aspect of being a US citizen. Our nation must not provide access to citizenship to those who broke our laws.

Opposed to the DREAM Act: Tiahrt strongly opposes the DREAM Act, that would allow provide an amnesty for younger illegal immigrants and gain in-state tuition at US higher education. This will only encourage additional illegal immigration.

Support for Border Security and E-Verify: Securing our borders and employment verification must be the top priority. Undocumented entry and working illegal in this nation are simply unacceptable.

Interesting race. Both Moran and Tiahrt have good conservative endorsements, though seems to me to be the more conservative.

Mark Levin and the Tea Party Express appear to have endorsed Tiahrt for example.

Anyway, whomever wins is good.

Jerry Moran got a rating of 0% from FAIR indicating a total lack of resolve on Illegal Immigration issues:

Voted NO on reporting illegal aliens who receive hospital treatment.

Vote to pass the bill that would require hospitals to gather and report information on possible illegal aliens before hospitals can be reimbursed for treating them. The bill would also make employers liable for the reimbursements if an undocumented employee seeks medical attention, unless the employer meets particular conditions for exemption. The bill would specify that hospitals aren't required to provide care to undocumented aliens if they can be transported to their home country without a significant chance of worsening their condition. Reference: Undocumented Alien Emergency Medical Assistance Amendments; Bill HR 3722 ; vote number 2004-182 on May 20, 2004

Voted YES on extending Immigrant Residency rules.

Vote on motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill that would extend by four months a law allowing some immigrants to remain in the country while pursuing legal residency. Reference: Motion sponsoerd by Gekas, R-PA; Bill HR1885 ; vote number 2001-127 on May 21, 2001

Voted YES on more immigrant visas for skilled workers.

Vote to pass a bill to increase the number of temporary visas granted to highly skilled workers from 65,000 to 115,000 by the year 2000. Reference: Bill introduced by Smith, R-TX.; Bill HR 3736 ; vote number 1998-460 on Sep 24, 1998

Seems like Terry Moran is the Perfect John McCain and GOP Establishment candidate.

Either Jim Demint made a big mistake here or there is more to the picture not readily available.

Todd Tiarht is rated 100% by FAIR indicating a voting record restricting immigration.

Good stuff. Brian Bilbray is one of our San Diego Conservative Republican Congressmen and fighting illegals for years.
Rep. Tiahrt siding with Bilbray is great.

Does anyone have a link to the thread where McCain is endorsing Terry Moran?

Just read the thread on McCain, but Palin backs Tiahrt and she backed Fiorina over DeVore. So for now I’ll stay with Moran.

Yes, McCain did endorse Jerry Moran, and given his weakness on border issues, it is no wonder!

Neither Moran nor Tiahrt seems unacceptable. Having looked into it, Tiahrt is far more of an activist than Moran. I could see him developing into another Jesse Helms in terms of promoting that which is good and derailing that which is evil.

Sarah Palin’s endorsement will launch Tiahrt into the stratosphere and into the Senate. Godspeed!

The problem with Terry Moran, is that he seems to have the same philosophy as most of the establishment GOP Senators, he is real soft when it comes to the border, otherwise, he is 100% on conservative issues. But it's that one issue that really bothers me.

Thanks.

wouldn’t have anything to do with one being in the state of Kansas and the other being in the state of California? Or of one having a chance to win and the other not breaking 15% after months of trying? you think...

I think this is a good point. Moran doesn’t seem to be a bad candidate, but he’s definitely softer on some issues than Tiahrt and seems to be more “moderate” in nature with more of a tendency to get along. The deal is that this is Kansas, and Republicans shouldn’t look for a more moderate candidate here. This is a place where we can get someone who goes in to do battle and can work to change minds in the senate when he’s in Washington and not worry about repercussions back home.

So you're saying Palin bases her picks on whether they can win rather than whether they're the conservative?

“So you’re saying Palin bases her picks on whether they can win rather than whether they’re the conservative?”

I’m saying she has a good sense of reality. She gave Devore plenty of time to put together some sort of campaign. He got no traction, so she went with someone who had a chance. It was too important to find a viable candidate in California to endorse a campaign that had no money and had shown no capability of winning a statewide race.

I appreciate that you are trying to boil this down to a either/or choice that applies to both states, but that isn’t reality.
