A great deal of the internet is populated by C2PO wanna bees. If you ever watched a Star Wars movie (and who hasnt) you know the shiny gold robot named C3PO whose purpose is etiquette and protocol. The internet has developed its own system of etiquette and protocol. One of these is an abhorrence of what is referred to as link whoring which is defined as encouraging people to click on your website. According to this protocol the internet virgin is supposed to sit demurely on the sidelines, knees tightly together, until she is spotted by a search engine like Google.
This phenomenon was one I recently experienced at one of my favorite sites, FreeRepublic.

LOL!
Now you are stealing from movies!
What a putz.
Thanks for keeping the thread going. Your check’s in the mail.

That is just too easy..
Well I can see why you have a problem understanding excerpting. You have no clue how copyright works at all:
by Moira Allen Copyrighting your work is probably the easiest part of writing, because your work is automatically protected the moment you write it down. You do not have to "register" a copyright for it to be valid. If you're nervous, you can place a copyright notice on your material by putting the following information in the upper right corner of your document: Copyright © 200X by (your name) Click Herefor rest of article.Understanding Rights and Copyright
Two of the most common questions I hear are "How do I copyright my work?" and "How do I prevent editors from stealing my ideas?"
"FR typically doesn't allow porn, racist or excessively violent videos. If that is what he has on his blog then he shouldn't be flogging it here."
FR doesn't allow ANY videos you must goto another site to see them. Do you rail on about Video Bloggers who post their work on FR?
Do you even have the slightest clue at all about the issue of Copyright Law and how FR works as far as video Content goes?
If I copy the Star Spangled Banner and change a word I do not own it as my original work.
If you want to post a video link use the original link not a link to your crappy blog.
If you don’t want to be taken to task for blog pimping then don’t do it.
Simple.
No, I rail about people who post other's work on their crap blog instead of the original site where the actual person with talent keeps the rest of THEIR work.
See, simple.
What does copyright law have to do with some lame blogger
scratching out some grammatically unsound and boring drivel
and then posting a teaser to it on FR, forcing readers to
provide blog hits to read the rest of the snivelly content?
What does copyright law have to do with some lame blogger
stealing someone's video off Youtube, embedding it on his
virus-laden blog and posting a teaser to it on FR, forcing readers to
provide blog hits to see a video the pimp HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH?
I think if Jim had a problem with you wasting his valuable electrons, he'd let you know. If what you write is worth reading (and it seems interesting enough to me) then in time, as others became familiar with your work, they'll see your thread, contribute- rather than just questioning your motives, and eventually someone would go to your site first and post your article here.
You nailed it.
The problem is that the blog pimps are too lazy to do any heavy lifting. If this feller had posted his full length article and I felt it was good I would have visited his blog. I however won’t now because he took the lazy path rather than put some effort out.
I don’t do business with people who cheat at golf either.
I doubt your check is any better than your writing so no thanks.
At least the thread got some hits even if your blog didn't.
From your viewpoint, I'm sure that is a good argument.
However, I must say that I came to FR (and stay at FR) to:
1. Read articles that interest me.
2. See what other Conservatives have to say about those articles.
3. Be informed about the background and agenda of the individuals who generated the articles.
4. Gain information from other posters who are more knowledgeable on the topics.
5. Get access to links posted in the comments which provide further information supporting or arguing against the information in the original posted article.
6. Reading comments that are moderated to eliminate the leftist crazies' rants, and that exist at FR, along with the article itself.
Accessing the plethora of information on FR can sometimes be like trying to take a sip from a wide open fire hose, and there are only so many hours in a day.
I prefer to accomplish item #1 above by having the full article posted at FR, so that I can quickly move on to accomplishing items 2-6.
Sadly (for me), too many new bloggers are "pimping their blog" on FR with the clear desire to drive traffic (and income from hits) to their blog by partial-posting.
That, coupled with noobs who seem to have a dire need to post vanities, sometimes makes me think that they believe FR is some sort of "facebook/look at me" activity.
FR's owner is the final arbitrator of what will appear on FR, and at this juncture he is allowing partial posting of blogs. Obviously, I fully control my clicking activity at FR and thus can chose not to read something or follow an off-site link.
My suggestion would be that someone who wants to generate interest in their blog should post their full article on FR. If they are good enough writers, with good information to share, they will achieve enough "net cred" to generate interest in what else they might have to say, over on their own site.
Good luck with your endeavors and remember that another poster on FR is not "in charge" of you or FR, and thus their comments are worth what you paid for them. But do be very careful with your own "justifications" for whatever you decide to do.
As Sky King used to say: "Over and Out".
Because how else can you surreptitiously whore for hits?

;-D
I wanna bee C5PO.
Has a beat, you can dance to it.
Dang!
And I thought my 4-wheeler was sufficiently customized
when I peeled off all the stupid safety warnings.
Musta been three square feet worth.
That's right.
I need a C4PO.
The goats ate most of my stickers, bless their hearts.
Ate the throttle extension and all the rubber off my gun rack too but they thought they were doing me a favor, I reckon....:)
[if we aren’t supposed to “carry a passenger on the back” else it’ll flip over, how do we get the dead buck home? drag him? down a granite mountain side, he’d be hamburger before I got home...and why is the platform back there, then, anyway if we can’t haul any”body” on it?]
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. First, there are no ads on my blog so the number of hits it gets has absolutely nothing to do with my income. My income comes from other sources having absolutely nothing to do with blogging. Ironically, most of the bigger bloggers generate significant income from the ads they run so the number of hits is very important to them.
Secondly, I have posted here enough by now and my name is known well enough known that people will either ignore me or click on me because they want to know what I have to say. Im not tricking anyone into going to my blog, using bait & switch or whatever people do who try to drum up traffic for nefarious purposes. My only purpose is to post articles that interest me, either written by me or by others on which I comment. Sort of like Instapundit only more verbose.
I respect what a lot of people who post here have to say. You have provided a reasonable response and I fully agree that the information here is overwhelming. I usually come here to scan the headlines to see if there is anything I have missed. I dont read most of the postings because I dont have the time; besides they dont interest me.
You may note that the Browse by forum box on the top right side of has a section specifically titled Bloggers and personal. Thats where my posts go. You can avoid all the bloggers simply by not clicking on that section. My understanding is that Jim Robinson specifically decided to segregate us bloggers from the others. I think of it as my own little ghetto.
A final point, I take peoples comments seriously if they are serious and their comments are worthwhile. So I considered posting entire articles. I decided not to because I wont put up with cyber bullying. I post many more articles than I put on FR. I decided to be a little more combative today because of the C3POs that have decided to stalk me here. But go back to my website and check out what I wrote. You may find yourself looking at FR and The Virginian. Also check out the links to other bloggers. My favorite is Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit (who makes a pretty good second salary from blog ads as well as his income as a law professor).
Thanks and good luck to you.
I reckon most of those warnings are fake.
I’ve had dead deer on the front rack, the back rack,
up hill, down hill, through gravelly ditches in the dark
and dead drunk and ain’t nothing happened at all.
Feh.
Alas, mine is just plain olive drab....:(
LOL!
I bet....:))
[hubby had me on the back and gunned it up a hill while towing an 18 foot trailer and we didn’t fall over but it sure “got me religion” there for a second]
