C3PO: “Etiquette and Protocol Robot”
The Virginian ^ | 6/19/2010 | Moneyrunner

Posted on 06/19/2010 7:27:41 AM PDT by moneyrunner

A great deal of the internet is populated by C2PO wanna bees. If you ever watched a Star Wars movie (and who hasn’t) you know the shiny gold robot named C3PO whose purpose is “etiquette and protocol.” The internet has developed its own system of etiquette and protocol. One of these is an abhorrence of what is referred to as “link whoring” which is defined as encouraging people to click on your website. According to this protocol the internet virgin is supposed to sit demurely on the sidelines, knees tightly together, until she is spotted by a search engine like Google.

This phenomenon was one I recently experienced at one of my favorite sites, FreeRepublic.

Methinks not bundles of sticks, perhaps.

Rather British Meatballs made from pork offal.

"I want blog pimps to post in full and provide actual original links to videos and quit excerpting to their virus and adware laden blogs."

Even though Free Republic has no problem with folks excerpting? And being that it helps with FR's popularity to have linkbacks and more links on the net then basically you wish to limit Free Republic's popularity.

I have an idea why don't you ask Jimrob and the Mods if this is what they want. If they do then we can put this issue to rest. Just ping them to the thread and ask.

I don’t understand the concept of posting partial information on FR when full info is available and permitted. Many Blog sites add spyware and adware I don’t need on my computer.

If the goal is as some claim, to get the message to as many conservatives as possible, then post the whole message.

I’m fine with the idea to include links to find more similar articles. But don’t turn FR into your free marketing system without sharing content.

"Point out where I mentioned anything about bandwidth."

Oh you aren't one of the blog pimp police screaming about leaching and bandwidth? hahahah OK then but the Keystone Cops have been claiming bandwidth as the main reason leaching bandwidth was the exact term used. And being that what you are proposing is using FR as the blog author's main posting site for the work it would indeed be using FR's bandwidth!

Sigh, one more time the more linkbacks and links Free Republic gets on the net the more popularity it gets thus more people read Free Republic thus there are more chances the site will get new donors thus keeping the site flush with capital to keep the servers running.

Really the concept is not that hard. Just remember more links and linkbacks is good! Its all you really need to know. Further IF Free Republic wants to stop such all they need do is announce it. They haven't so its all good!

Posting the video directly still give hits to the video creator each time someone clicks the link to view it.

Web crawlers still find the link on FR and it gains from this busy site as well.

There is no reason to add a middle site running adware except to the gain of a third party, often not the content creator.

I am in favor of drawing more attention to this site. Posting a full blog on FR and excerpts to that blog on other forums will increase traffic to this site and provide the opportunity to support issues relevant to this site rather than Google’s.

now we have tossed the whole 'It takes up band width" argument

Uh.. see post number 12 by moneyrunner, who used that
argument in FAVOR of blogpimping. You're losing it.

But I'm not going to take up Jim's bandwidth to do it.

(moneyrunner, post #12, this thread.)

Ahhh yeah there is a BIG reason... Youtube gives rankings on the basis of links AND Embeds. in fact it is rumored the embeds count higher than links! Further IF the content Creator wishes He can disable the embedding script for each video he uploads.

Excellent Idea, just tell John Robinson to remove the excerpt button and problem solved!

popularity it gets thus more people read Free Republic

If you think blog pimps are increasing FR popularity then you are too insipid to be attempting to hold up your end of the discussion.

Note, we will continue to point out pimping when we see it. Simply accept that as a fact. Your continued support of spreading viruses and adware through pimping only steels our resolve.

Oh no see you are the one losing it. You guys claimed that by excerpting it was leeching bandwidth and they instead should post the WHOLE thread here which of course is exactly opposite and would cause even more of FR's band width to be used. That was the part that got us all giggling here at the shop.

"You guys" is the key phrase here. It was Salamander your buddy:

Jim has to pay for the bandwidth *we* are blessed with, out of the conviction of his political principles yet there are those who abuse their privilege to post here by pimping their blogs in a parasitic fashion....

You’ll have to pardon me, but I do dislike seeing JR taken advantage of in such manner.

If *you’re* okay with pay-per-click ticks sucking him dry, that’s your ‘viewpoint’, not mine.

See Salamander has yet to realize that his argument is totally backwards, I notice you didn't point it out for him either hahahah Some buddy you are!

Ahh you do have a problem with reading comprehension don't you?

I see, so now "we" (as in you the pimping police group) have tossed the whole 'It takes up band width" argument since your other objection has been delt with...
