C3PO: “Etiquette and Protocol Robot”
The Virginian ^ | 6/19/2010 | Moneyrunner

Posted on 06/19/2010 7:27:41 AM PDT by moneyrunner

A great deal of the internet is populated by C2PO wanna bees. If you ever watched a Star Wars movie (and who hasn’t) you know the shiny gold robot named C3PO whose purpose is “etiquette and protocol.” The internet has developed its own system of etiquette and protocol. One of these is an abhorrence of what is referred to as “link whoring” which is defined as encouraging people to click on your website. According to this protocol the internet virgin is supposed to sit demurely on the sidelines, knees tightly together, until she is spotted by a search engine like Google.

This phenomenon was one I recently experienced at one of my favorite sites, FreeRepublic.

Many (not all) of the bloggers are not using there own material but simply using there blog to link someone else’s You-tune video with no original content.

They may he free to do so, but others are free to post the link directly.

Ahh but do you know why youtubers allow people to embed? Do you realize the person who uploads the video can stop people from embedding?

Most folks want their vids to go viral the more people embed it and the more points on the Internet it gets, makes it even more popular on youtube AND gets it a higher ranking on the search engines. When people subvert the process and post a link directly they prune branches off the viral tree. More branches the faster it goes viral!

If you want to read my entire post, you'll have to go to my blog.

The very definition of blog pimping and link whoring ya douche bag.

It is clear you both are a bundle of sticks and I hope you enjoy each others company until you wear your butts out.

OK - Let's look at the thread that started this discussion.

Under the headline "Obama Supporters Plug The Damned Hole" there was no text, other than "[video at link]."

This is the "video" that was posted at the link:

I'm sure the folks at "bonedjello.com" were really worried about getting this tired .gif, thats been around the block a dozen times to "go viral."

This is "pimpin' for hits" plain and simple.

If the blogger's intention was just to inform and entertain he could have followed the example of others who use this site by posting the .gif he thought was funny, and inviting others to come to his site for more of the same kind of entertainment.

“Bundle of sticks”!!!

There you go with the obscure literary references.

(They don’t teach English Lit at the Insurance Salesman School.)

The bloggers intention is to get people to read his stuff. You do understand that right?

Further IF Free Republic wants him NOT to post such they have mods to take care of it. Why is it you need to get involved?

Further do you have any idea how the Internet works? Linkbacks help with popularity so when a so called blog pimp puts a linkback to his site from Free Republic he is growing not only his popularity but Free Republics as well.

So did it ever occur to you guys that maybe just maybe the only people who have a problem with this issue is people who are ignorant of how this all works?

I think we still haven't got to the real reason many of you have a problem with it because each time you are proved wrong on the reason for your actions, you just morph to a new reason.

So tell us what really is the problem?

It's kind of like how it's legal to burn the flag.

The cops won't stop it.

A little "country justice" can get someone's mind right, though.

I see, so your endeavor to dole out "country justice" based on your idea that, its wrong to "blog pimp" even though all involved GAIN from the relationship including And Especially Free Republic is what is really important?

Or could it be that you have absolutely no idea whatsoever how all of this works and are just tilting not at windmills but at a mirage of a windmill?

If you think FR is growing because blog pimps are leeching then you truly are an idiot AND a bundle of sticks.

Gunner made a good point RE: flag burning and you have nothing to counter it with do you?

Ya stick boy ya.

Simple I am trying to stop idiots from continually subverting a beneficial relationship between bloggers and Free Republic. (A relationship I might point out was something Free Republic wanted being they made a special Category for Bloggers)

Especially when those doing it have no idea they are actually doing the work of the angry left by seeking to engage in activity the dampers Free Republic's popularity rating as well as the popularity rating of Youtube Videos that the authors have allowed embedding on so that they can get more and more people to put the viid eon on their sites.

When you subvert linkbacks and embeds you prune the viral tree the goal is to get as many points on the net as possible. Both linkbacks and regular links.

Why is it you wish to limit Free Republics link points on the Internet?

Revisting this thread, I noticed that Blogger (where the remainder of this article is posted) is a product of Google. I also noticed at the bottom of the article is an Public Service Ad from Google encouraging the reader to "help those in need" by visiting concern.net. Another write-up has another Public Service Ad from Google to "help relieve poverty" by visiting solar-aid.org.

There may be a beneficial relationship between FR, Google, and solar-aid.org or other Public Service Ads from Google. Maybe.

There is certainly a greater benefit in keeping the complete blog in one place, such as FR. The blogger could then use his/her profile page as an archive for other write-ups and leave the links to Public Service Ads to FR, not Google.

I want blog pimps to post in full and provide actual original links to videos and quit excerpting to their virus and adware laden blogs.

Simple.

Another benefit is by keeping the full blog at Free Republic and not someplace like Google's Blogger, the blogger and other readers might help grow this site by linking excerpts of the FR blog in other forums, rather than drawing the reader away from FR in favor of links to Public Service Ads from Google.

The blog is on one place. On the blogger's blog and if you are worried that FR may be tainted by google, it has already been poointed out by the Keystome cops of the blogpimp policing world that FR uses a cookie from google on this site.

And IF Free Republic wishes to do as you say they have the capabilities to enact it. But maybe they actually like having hundreds of blogs who each have many linkbacks from free republic to multiple entries on their blogs rather than just one. Which of course makes FR's popularity ranking higher as well as the bloggers higher.
