Its been said that life often imitates art. However, I never imagined that the satirical airbrushing campaign undertaken by the rabid anti-smoking lobby at the end of Thank You For Smoking would ever actually be replicated in real life. Apparently, as the Daily Mail reports, I was wrong (h/t Adam S Baldwin):
It seems the man who steered Britain through the most dangerous period of its recent history may have fallen victim to the modern curse of political correctness.

I cant imagine what this would do to Groucho Marx, George Burns and Sigmund Freud.
Winston also consumed a prodigious amount of booze it seems.
That’s just wrong on so many levels.
Or Bill Clinton.
Without the cigar, his impeachment lacks context.
While we’re at it, we should get rid of the fiddles used by Jack Benny, Henny Youngman, and Yitzhak Perlman. We have to do something about the ubiquitous portrayal of violins in our culture.
Did they take away McArthur’s pipe?
I wouldn’t be surprised. Him and Reagan and Margaret Thatcher for starters.
I don't know if that's possible.
I think Paul McCartney lost his cigarette crossing Abbey Road.
Obviously you havent been paying attention. If you had you might have noticed that a great deal of history has been airbrushed away. A good deal of the 1930s has been airbrushed to show that FDR was the greatest president of the 20th century.
Try it and there will always be someone who will call you on it and make the truth be known.
Sure plenty of people try to tell the truth to no avail. The history that is taught to the masses all say the same thing. Tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.
The victor writes history. The Dims have won for the last 80 years. If we want to write the history for a change we need to start winning. We need to start playing the game like we want to win.
Oh you can change history alright. Happens all the time. Sure there will probably always be a handful of people that know Churchill smoked, but with these kind of changes very shortly the vast majority won’t, because they’ll never have seen a picture of it. You can’t change the past, but history is very malleable.
You can't change history but you can change the "perception" of history.
"History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon." Napoleon Bonaparte
We who remember, we who recall the details of an event will pass from the scene entirely. Before that, it is still just your word against the word of another.
Eisenhower told the people liberating Hitlers concentration camps to take lots of pictures because sure as hell they will one day be some bastards who will say it never happened.
Please dont ask for an exact quote but Ike said something to the effect, "Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the track of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened".
I guess George Burn's cigar will be history's next revison.
What ain't wrong is busting a blog pimp's effort to get hits so that somebody will click to go look at pics.
I think you missed my point. No matter who tries to tell me different I know that Churchill smoked. You can’t change that. I also know what an ass Roosevelt was and the truth about his administration. No one can change that. I can’t speak to what is being taught now but the truth will always be there for people who seek it.
