Why is Obama refusing to waive the Jones Act? He's aiding in the destruction of the Gulf
Examiner.com ^ | June 12, 2010 | Kimberly Morin

Obama has refused to waive the Jones Act. His Administration keeps putting the blame on the Coast Guard who puts the blame on others for not requesting the Jones Act be waived. Yet a simple Executive Order signed by Obama could waive the Jones Act in about 3 minutes, less time than it takes Obama to set up a tee on the golf course. The Gulf is in dire need of all the help it can get. When foreign entities with better expertise and equipment in oil spills offer to help, why is Obama refusing? While Obama dithers in his bad leadership of the Oil Spill, the Gulf Coast dies more and more each day.

When you confront a disaster of this size you mobilize all possible resources and bring them to bear on the problem. But not if you're the Obama Administration. You dither around careful not to upset your pals in Big Labor

He wants the destruction.

That much is obvious.

“Obama deliberately did this.”

I doubt Obama knows what the Jones Act is.

2009 - E.O. 13489 - E.O. 13527 (39 Executive orders issued)

2010 - E.O. 13528 - E.O. 13543 (16 Executive orders issued)

He knows how to do them.

Is this the Jones Act to which you refer?

He wants the destruction.

In the long run, it serves the interests of the lunatic left-wing fringe. They want lots and lots of photos to use in their fund-fraising efforts. They want to be able to argue that our oil addiction is causing widespread damage to the environment.

Letting a spill get out of control, at the executive level, is what's causing widespread damage to the environment.

At first I doubted he even knew of the existence of the Jones Act or that President Bush suspended the act following Hurricane Katrina.

Now he’s stuck, big time. The unions are perfectly happy to see the people in the Gulf lose their economy. I doubt the fishermen are unionized.

How is the Jones Act impeding the cleanup?

Other countries have offered aid to clean up this mess.

In a nutshell and correct if I am wrong FReepers....the ships that come into US waters have to be controlled by US (unionized) crews.......so the foreign ships with foreign workers on them that can help to clean this mess are not allowed......

The Netherlands has offered use of their oil skimmers, which are quite good. They had also offered the use of their expertise in barrier islands. The Zero Administration has invoked the Jones Act to block this. All that the Netherlands would have charged for would have been costs associated with transporting the skimmers. Zero wants the situation to worsen for the reasons of political theatre, to attempt to make the eeevilll Republicans (including LA Gov Bobby Jindal, who is showing more initiative than the Zero) and the eeeeeviiiillll capitalists (who need to be destroyed anyway, according to recent public pronouncements by Zero’s friends) look bad, and have the lamestream media, led by GE owned MSNBC, beat up on them.

Thanks. What I could gather of the Jones Act is that it requires ships carrying cargo between US ports be US ships, or something like that. Which doesn’t really seem to apply to the cleanup ships. And yet Obama is using it to apply to them?

Sounds incredible.

Why is Obama refusing to waive the Jones Act?

Why is he turning down help from all over the US?

Why isn’t he letting them build sand berms in Louisiana?

Why is he acting like he wants to nationalize energy?

17 countries, right off the bat, offered aid, expertise and equipment - had bummer allowed them to come then, not much oil, if any, would have reached shores. they can't come into our territorial waters or ports without his waiver of the Jones Act - that forbids it.

bummer boy refused all but 2: Mexico and Norway. That makes him culpable for the destruction. It's BP's job to stop the spill but, BY LAW, it's the federal gov't responsibility to take care of the resulting damage. He's famous for being "present." This time, he's just out to lunch - or golf, or basketball, or BBQ's, or fund raising, or entertaining rock stars and others, or vacationing. In other words, a little old thing like the biggest oil spill in our history isn't going to be allowed to change his schedule. Let them eat cake - covered in oil.

Thanks. I was aware that in particular the Dutch had offered help and expertise and were turned down. I was not aware that the Jones Act had anything to do with it. From my reading of the Act it shouldn't even apply so it would shock me to see it applied here.

And yet, yes, thanks Google, I found the report where the Coast Guard affirmed that yes, the Jones Act is being applied here and the additional skimmers are being turned away on that basis.

Incredible. Criminal, in my view.

The Jones Act is about hauling from US port to another US port. Foreign ships call at our ports all the time.
