Why Do Obama, BP Refuse to Use the Most Effective Method of Oil Cleanup?
Conservative Examiner ^ | 6/5/2010 | Anthony G. Martin

Posted on 06/05/2010 11:44:10 AM PDT by Welshman007

As the Gulf oil disaster closes in on the 50-day mark, the Obama Administration and BP refuse to use the most effective method of oil cleanup. The top oil barons of the world--the Saudis--have used this method to avoid a mammoth oil disaster.

And the result was swift, effective, and conclusive.

In 1993 and '94 the Saudis faced an oil spill of historic proportions in the Arabian Gulf as four leaking tankers and two oil gushers threatened to spur a catastrophic event that was 65 times worse than the Exxon-Valdez spill.

An American engineer, Nick Pozzi, was part of a task force charged with developing a solution to the looming disaster.

Do you know what the purpose of FEMA is?

FEMA is an executive department and the acronym stands for Federal Emergency Management Agency. The head of the executive branch is the president. Therefore, the response of FEMA in any disaster is the president’s ball court.

And I’m not even talking about Louisiana. I live in Alabama. We’re often forgotten about when talking about Katrina but we still had our worst storm surge in 90 years.

And the governors do not have FEMA at their disposal. They can’t order FEMA to do anything. That comes from the president.

And it would not have taken much effort as you think to have had several million MRES stockpiled in cities across the region that weekend so that they could be deployed into the disaster area as soon as the all clear was given.

For starters he could have actually got down here on Monday instead of when he did. Brown ended up taking the fall for what was really his failure.

And done what? His presence would have done nothing except hamper and interfere with the clean up- He could see everything he needed to see with the news. A president traveling to the site of a disaster does nothing except require that traffic be stopped and additional security be provided. What a waste of time and money that could better be used for relief.

. Name one thing he should have done about Katrina but didn't do.

Bush should have demolished the levies, like he was accused of doing. Would have done everyone a favor.

Clearly a conspiracy by BP and the President to lose a huge investment and cause a PR nightmare for the both of them. Does their perfidy know no bounds?

My God, this was like one of the biggest big one scenarios in the history of mankind.

Nope. It wasn't even the biggest hurricane to hit the U.S. in the past 10 years.

The problem was the complete and utter incompetence and corruption of the democrats that controlled and continue to control New Orleans and most of the rest of Louisiana. Compare what happened in New Orleans to what happened when major hurricanes hit Florida and Texas.

Of course Obama is not going to give Jindal anything. Jindal has the ability to be the Republican answer to him.

I haven’t said that Bush’s response to Katrina was worse than Obama’s to the spill. Far from it. Obama’s response to the oil spill makes Bush’s response to Katrina look like Bob Riley’s.

However, I used that as an analogue because in both cases, the impression was/has been made that they have not been as attentive or concerned as they needed to. That’s why this has been called Obama’s Katrina.

Part of it is the biggest block that most engineers face:

NIH Syndrome - Not Invented Here.

People with big egos and little backing never accept solutions outside their chosen circle, because that would be to implicitly admit their own weaknesses. That regardless of what they had been spouting, they are NOT the smartest or the best.

So you ignore the best solutions, and go forward with what your own, limited, inexperienced group comes up with. And you don’t solve the problem. And you lash out at everyone else.

It’s what children and those who think with their heart not their head do. As well as PHBs (Pointy Haired Bosses). Obama’s ego is huge and fragile, and his knowledge - and those of his chosen inner circle and advisors - is severely lacking. But no, they cannot ask for outside help because that would admit that The One doesn’t know all, he’s not the one we’ve been waiting for...

Ego. Pure and simple. Ego.

...and on what basis, pray tell, do you aver that George Bush was in “over his head” when it came to Katrina? That’s total bulls**t. Look at the Governor at the time (that moron) and the crooked, lame brained mayor of New Orleans for examples of “in over their heads”.

Refusal to use a tried and true method is beyond stupidity - its criminal ...

If you have the pumps and the tankers - YOU USE THEM !!! It may have only picked up 50% of the oil [I’m purposely low-balling here], but there would ONLY be 25M gallons in the water now ...

No IFS, ANDS or BUTS ...

I worked for years at MCI [telecom] in disaster recovery ...

We had equipment staged ALL around the country JUST IN CASE of catastrophic events - and we had them [believe me] ...

Failure to use equipment when it is available CANNOT be excused ...

Where Bush failed in Katrina was not in as much of what he did but how he let himself be portrayed

So his failure is not putting style over substance. Good to know. The appearance of doing something good is more important than actually doing something good.

The Kenyan will never be hanged — our congresscritters will make sure it won’t happen.

Work continues to collect and disperse oil that has reached the surface of the sea.
More than 275 vessels are being used, including skimmers, tugs, barges and recovery vessels.
Flights have also been carried out to spray dispersant onto the oil when weather conditions allow.
Fire boom has also been deployed to contain and burn heavier pockets of oil.

Oil floats because it has a lower specific gravity than water. It’s similar to what happens with oil and vinegar in salad dressing.

Skimming is one of many processes being used by BP to limit the impact of the oil leaking in the Gulf of Mexico.

Often a skimmer uses a floating boom system to sweep oil across the water surface, concentrating the oil to make the skimming process more effective and efficient.

Skimmers use a variety of methods to mechanically separate oil from water. These include the use of belts, rotating discs and ropes.

The recovered oil is stored and later will be processed into fuel.

Skimmers come in many different sizes, depending on the environment they are meant to protect.

Skimmers are highly effective in calm waters, but less efficient in windy conditions or choppy waters.

BP is using a variety of skimmers and vessels to recover oil and protect the Gulf Coast. This page was last updated 4 May 2010

The oil tankers could still be made to suck up the water, make the oil/water separation on board and dump the bottom water back into the Gulf. The bilge water will be oily, but much less so that the oil/water mix sucked on board.

Your attempt at disguising your liberal leanings is thinly veiled. Katrina was Katrina, and it was the media and their ilk that considered Bush's actions incompetent. Katrina became a disaster because of two things. First, the local politicians were completely inept. Secondly, the people who were affected were rendered helpless due to their history of total government dependence.

You and Katrina are two fine examples of where socialism leads a nation.

For starters he could have actually got down here on Monday instead of when he did.

The storm WAS Monday. The storm surge didn't hit us until 10 a.m. The response with assistance was unprecedented.

Within days the National Guard was throwing U.T.H. milk and MREs onto our front yards.

Despite all his other super serious flaws, his response to Katrina was immediate and decisive unlike some other golfer/partier we both knOw and despise.

Bush was rebuffed at every early attempt to legally change the course of events in Louisiana. The Governor refused. President Bush’s only recourse to earlier action would have been to infringe on the rights of the State of Louisiana and go against the Constitution.

Louisiana elected the wrong people for decades. Proved by Katrina.
