Yes, I know about cultural sensitivity, tolerance and diversity. But tolerance of what? People who tolerate the intolerable will themselves become intolerable. Diversity of what? A prison contains diverse criminals − does that make it a desirable place to live? Sensitivity to which cultures? Cultures that degrade women to less-than-human status? Cultures that encourage child marriage, wife-beating and honor killings? Cultures that deny women the right to divorce or child custody? Cultures that encourage genital mutilation of older girls?

A documentary created by Dispathces, which was shot just before the Afghanistan war and was to focus on the plight of women under the rule of the taliban. Islam, Islamic, Muslim, Documentary, Afghanistan, Women, Veil, Opression, War.
IMHO wearing something like that in the western world makes you stand out more than not wearing one so by wearing them here they attract attention.I’m surprised that they aren’t followed by young men here just for the mystery part of it all?
And what exactly should we be saying and/or doing?
I could have said to her husband, “In this country, we insist that women have human rights. If you don’t agree, you are free to go to a country that does not grant women equal rights.” But I didn’t do that. Does that make me “culturally sensitive,” or just unwilling to be embarrassed by “causing trouble”?
