Fron the BP site:

BP started the “top kill” operations today to stop the flow of oil from the MC252 well in the Gulf of Mexico.

The procedure is intended to stem the flow of oil and gas and ultimately kill the well by injecting heavy drilling fluids through the blow out preventer on the seabed, down into the well.

Pumping started at 19.00 (UK) and 13.00 (CDT) and continues.

They ought to rename that “Blowout Preventer” to something more appropriate.

....and from the same blog-site this hasn’t been the country’s worst oil spill (yet).

I’m watching it, too. Although for all I can see, it looks like a feed of some old Soviet-era equipment in space, only tinted green.

Don’t have time to click on links but wondered if there is a time estimate for the process?

They should shove an umbrella type apparatus into the BP oil pipe, top first—once inserted, they should spring-open umbrella apparatus to cover the pipe hole that’s in the underwater oil field (oil entry side), thus, preventing oil from being sucked up through the pipe.

Makes more sense than plugging with mud.
(hat tip—my clever spouse!!!!)

Strange creatures are beginning to appear on the Lousianna shoreline now and are believed to be the result of being covered with oil and dispersants, more later on this breaking story ...

Hi RW - Thanks for the heads up.

Been following the Oil Drum site off and on today, too.

Still not sure what the heck is going on now - the pic looks totally different from earlier. Now it appears there are multiple plumes of a much lighter color - is it mud from the top kill just escaping from the BOP?

Just part of the process? (fingers crossed)
