FReeper needs advice on which imported Scotches and Whiskies are the best?

Posted on 05/20/2010 1:52:56 PM PDT by erod

Hi Friends, I am a Scotch and Whiskey novice for the most part. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker, but I’m limited in my knowledge of these two great liquors. The other day I realized that if the euro continues its fall and the dollar strengthens I will be able to buy more imported booze at cheaper prices (I know what you’re thinking, thanks Captain Obvious). So if this is the case (and hopefully it is) what would FReepers recommend as good imported liquor particularly in the Scotch and Whiskey categories? Best, -Erod

Good Choices in my private reserve I have
The Basics:
SN Pale Ale
Fat Tire
Seasonal Sam Adams

Rotating
Goose Island IPA
Left Hand: Milk Stout (awesome brew way better than Guiness)
DogFish Head: Brown Ale
Rogue: Dead Guy Ale
GLB: Edmund Fitzgerald

Btw I’m extremely jealous of the New Glarus stuff you Wisconsinites have, being in IL I have no way of getting my beloved Crackd’ Wheat.

Makers Mark is OK. For the money, I’d go with Buffalo Trace or Wild Turkey 101, if I am going bourbon.

Dude...I live in Chicago area.

I make a run once or twice a year, drop a couple $$ for 2 mix-n-match cases and enjoy! It’s only about 3-4 hours away.

Give Austen’s “Rare Breed” a try. Barrel proof but smooth and tatsty.

Glenmorangie Port Wood (important that it says “port wood” or “port cask” on the bottle, not “sherry cask”)

It is a single malt and if you have the time, you can just sit and smell it for an hour or so. Tumbler glass, 1 ice cube. Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Can’t beat the Langavulin for the scotch. I can still remember the first time I ever sniffed it. OMG.

For the bourbon try Bulleit. It;s the best and I like it for Manhattans. Sipping can’t beat Buffalo Trace. The Woodford or Knob Creek is pretty good if you don’t have other choices.

I live in McHenry so I’m like an hour from the border, but I have a supplier in the WI area. :)

Go Hawks!

I have an unopened bottle of Knob Creek. Also have an unopened bottle of Balvenie 12 year old double wood. I have yet to try either, although that may end soon.

I guess I just drank Jack because it was the whiskey that my favorite rock stars drank (Slash, Jimmy Page, etc.) but I’m starting to suspect that Jack Daniels is the Bud Light of whiskey. :-/

The Pound will have to fall a long way for me to be able to afford to buy this stuff. But if it does, I'm changing my screen name.

If the Pound falls so far that I can afford to try this, the rioters drink it all before it can be exported to me.

I second the nomination of Laphroaig.

The majority of folks will whine about it being “too peaty”, but it’s an Islay Scotch, dammit. Drink vodka if you want a characterless spirit.

Black Bush from the Bushmills Distilery in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is without a doubt a supurb whisky that beats Johnny Walker and many other Scotch whiskies. If a person were to like a malt whisky, Bushmills has some very good ones too.
