Iron Man 2: A Love Letter to Ronald Reagan?
Pajamas Media ^ | May 7 | John Boot

and the movie is also a virtual love letter to Ronald Reagan.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr., whose performance seems meant to school Christian Bale in the art of playing things loose) finds himself in trouble with a weaselly senator (Garry Shandling). The lawmaker accuses Stark, who has been boasting to the world of his ability to keep the peace, of purposely developing an offensive weapon that he misleadingly calls a defensive weapon.

That this is exactly the argument liberals (and the Soviets) used to excoriate Ronald Reagan and his SDI plan is delicious — but it gets better. As played by Shandling, the senator, who is from Pennsylvania, bears more than a slight resemblance to Arlen Specter, the classic Capitol Hill weasel who called himself a Republican for as long as he found it convenient and is now not only a Democrat but one of the most reliably liberal members of his caucus.....

Robert Downey has more or less admitted that, since getting off drugs, he’s become a conservative.

Supposedly Downey is a Republican but who knows. I would bet he had script input on the movie.

“Robert Downey has more or less admitted that, since getting off drugs, he’s become a conservative.”

You gotta have a real powerful career going to say that...he must be feeling pretty safe.

I like the analogy of this article.

Robert Downey Jr. even looks like the Tony Starks of Marvel.

My only beef with the movie is they made Nick Fury BLACK ( he was white in the comic books ). Why do they have to do that ? To prove they’re not racist ?

Notice how they had to make James West black in the movie remake of the Wild Wild West.

“Robert Downey has more or less admitted that, since getting off drugs, he’s become a conservative.”

Makes complete sense to me.

Mind on drugs, can’t think straight, self indulgent - liberal.

Clear mind, trying hard to stay clean, showing resolve - conservative.

I would like Downey even if he were a bed wetting liberal.

The whole James West in WWW being black was ridiculous given the time period the movie took place but I guess the writers could throw in some Southerners are racists lines. Since I am not a Iron Man comic I do not know if race has anything to do with the character.

Reminds me of an interview I saw with Dennis Hopper. The interviewer asked Hopper how he could be a Republican for over 20 something years (or whatever the number was) when he was surrounded by Hollywood liberals.

Hoppers reply: "Well, I got sober 20 years ago."

If it’s the Samuel Jackson character it’s probably because they got Samuel Jackson. He’s great for supporting roles.

I don’t know why they like to do that....I was sickened when a few years ago they remade “The Honeymooners” with pretty much all black actors.....

By the way Speaking of Superhero’s....If Iron Man is a “Conservative Hero” which villian would you say Obama fits?? I think Obama is “Apocalypse”...Demagouge...Has Blue Lips..Unknown Origins....Hmmmm....LOL

'You gotta have a real powerful career going to say that...he must be feeling pretty safe."

He gave a fairly lengthy interview to the NYTs (I think) right before the 1st Iron Man came out. He talked about his reluctance to discuss his own political views, especially at certain Hollywood parties.

Have to agree there about Jackson.
I’d try to find a way to put him in my movie if I were to make one...and I’d have him curse alot and wear an afro....and he would be Irish....

From a NY Times article (found on Wikipedia):

Downey is quoted as saying: “I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.”

I like him even more now!

Will Smith turned down the lead role in The Matrix series to star in Wild Wild West with Kevin Kline.

>>Until his next fall from the wagon?<<

He’s been doing great for years. He says he replaced drugs with exercise and martial arts. That makes sense because the euphoria connected with exercise is caused by the release of endorphins.

I believe it with his washboard stomach and outtie bellybutton.

James West being black may have worked if Mel Brooks was directing (Blazing West??) but the silly spider thingie the bad guy was riding really turned the remake into a movie that “would have worked better as a cartoon”.
