I have been following the GOP Senate primary race for some time. I had studied the candidates and after awhile I came to the conclusion that I wanted to support Chuck DeVore in that race. I followed his campaign, saw him give a speech last month, and even gave him some of my paycheck.
My opinion changed today after Sarah Palin gave her endorsement to DeVore’s challenger, Carly Fiorina. It wasn’t Governor Palin’s endorsement that got me to change my mind about him, it was his reaction to the endorsement that served as a big red flag warning to this man’s leadership capabilities. Plain and simple, Chuck DeVore is no statesmen. The statement he allowed to be released by his campaign was immature and derogatory. It said:
“This grassroots movement is actually a grassroots movement,” said DeVore spokesperson Joshua Trevino. “Carly Fiorina thinks she can find the sheepdog to corral the sheep. Chuck DeVore knows they’re not sheep at all. They’re Americans. And they’ll make their own decisions.”

The writer touts the ad at the link as “the best he’s seen” and it *is* GOOD.
Really shreds Boxer with truth and then tells Carly’s story.
I’m not blaming anyone for DeVore’s “shortcommings”, if indeed he really has them.
The real problem is the immature desire we seem to have for glamour and “charisma” in a candidate that developed in connection with the first national election that was heavily influenced by television - Kennedy/Nixon. Since then, at all levels, we have been looking at image more than substance. We were lucky with Reagan because he had both, but the real shortcoming is with us. But we have been poorly served by allowing ourselves to be swayed by image - that’s how you end up with Arnolds and Baracks. We need to find the intellectual and moral maturity to vote on the basis of substance, not on the basis of who reads the best from a telepromoter or who has the best writers for his telepromoter.
I realize that this may not apply to you, but I think that the problem is widespread.
You’re not even close, but you are advocating Boxer-light for as far as the eye can see. Fiorina and RINOs like her are a “difference” that really don’t make a difference.

That would have been a far better thing for her to have done. I can understand her endorsement of McCain, although it would have been better if she hadn’t have done it. In this case, however, the endorsement causes me to question her judgment.
achilles2000 you are fighting tooth and nail for Tom Campbell on thread after thread, give it a rest.
You remind me of an important point. McClintock lost against Arnold, but he moved up into Congress. One reason to run DeVore is to help educate the public and build a movement, but another is that it puts him in a position to move ahead even if he were to lose. Given what is happening in the markets and in Europe, it could be that come November anybody could beat Boxer. If that is the case, won’t the conservatives who are watching today’s polls feel smart about having handed the seat to a younger version of Olympia Snowe.
I think that you are right that Palin has some realpolitic reason for supporting Fiorina, which makes just another pol when we need something better. I am very disappointed in Palin. She could stood for principle or at least have let this one play out.

I think one of the things that many of us have to realize is that not everyone is as informed or educated on political issues but they still make up a good portion of the voting class, when they can be bothered. Those are just as much of a target as those of us who are always sitting in the front row and have the next 20 election days programmed into our blackberry calenders. ;)
We need honest conservatives that also appeal to the common man. People are looking for Sarah Palin's and JoethePlumbers because they make them feel more comfortable with the issues and carry their message in a way that they can understand and relate to.
Not once have I indicated anything like support for Tom Campbell. I understand that dislike of Campbell is driving you, but I suspect you will find that if elected Fiorina within her first term will turn out to be Campbell-in-a-skirt.
Look, I am not accusing you of being a crypto-liberal, but I do believe that your thinking is too short-term and doesn’t factor in that by November Boxer and other Obamaites may be beatable by anybody. If the Euro collapses and the bond market begins demanding higher interest rates on US sovereign debt, today may seem like the “good old days” by November. Even without a bond market crisis, the end of census employment and other factors may push the unemployment rate over 10%, and that could be devastating to the Ds.

But the first requirement is being an honest conservative, which Fiorina almost certainly isn’t.
Plain and simple...
Fiorina is very conservative for California.
She is also very electable and has a circle of friends and business colleagues that want her elected and have deep pockets.
You are most certainly pushing for Barbara boxer to win reelection.
You keep saying it in your posts, you see it as some bizarre “big picture” strategy.
I want to defeat Boxer, not give her six more years so that a weak candidate like Devore can have “a better platform” to “build a movement”.
The guy can’t even make a decent showing in a Republican primary, he isn’t going to be leading any crusades.
I am out to defeat first, Tom Campbell, and then Barbara Boxer.
Never just give away a Senate seat, especially under these circumstances.
