UKIP got million votes and zero seats in Britain: lessons for the Republicans and the Tea Party

The UK Independence Party came forth in the overall vote in the 2010 British elections with over 900 000 people putting their trust in the party running on the platform of getting out of the European Union. The British National Party came fifth with over half a million votes.

Both UKIP and BNP received zero seats in the British parliament – 0, nada, zilch, none… The hate for the EU is spread all through the Kingdom, but is not concentrated in any particular place so the party can gain a seat in the parliament....

The Out of EU, fiscal responsibility, tax-cuts crowd refused to join the mainstream conservatives. David Cameron bares the fault for the gridlock the UK is today. He insulted the UKIP voters calling them “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists, mostly”. The arrogance and disrespect for the anti-EU folks is the main reason Cameron is heaving a headache today.

There is a lesson to be learned for the US Tea Party here: work hard during the primaries to advance candidates that represent you the best. Republicans should be patient and listening to the conservatives of all kind. And the main lesson is: when the general election comes the conservatives should unite behind the candidates that survived the primaries, because fractionating of the vote will not bring the sweeping conservative change they crave.

Cameron sounds like the open-border RINOs in the GOP.

UK has not quite run out of OPM yet. The virus will run from the most socialist country first to the least socialist last.

Exactly - one million right wingers in Britain refused to vote for Cameron. No wonder he is laying bed with the left of Brown - Nick Clegg.

Yeah, that had me scratching my head in disbelief. UKIP had close to 1 million votes and no seats, yet some Irish party only had 160,000 votes and 8 seats. I guess it's all location, location, location. Under our system in the US, I guess if we had any viable 3rd parties you could see the same thing. In theory if the 3rd party ran strong against Republicans in Republican leaning districts and strong against Democrats in Democrat leaning districts, but just not quite strong enough to win but strong enough to place 2nd with the opposition party a distant 3rd, it would be farfetched but possible that the 3rd party could beat both republicans and democrats in the popular vote nationwide, but not win one congressional seat.

The UK elections show what would happen if we have third party diluting the vote in November. The time to push for real conservatives is now in the primaries.

Exactly. It is a shame there are just so many people that fail to grasp this concept. You've still got dingbats out voting for things like the Constitution Party, etc. The leftist elite in this country are always delighted to see the right dilute its influence like this. The time to settle these matters is in the Republican primary.

The got million and a half hard-line anti European Union voters - and they are not represented in their parliament. This is the inconvenient truth of the British elections.

The UKIP was spread out thin. The Irish Party was in N Ireland and thats it.

True enough. The BNP are hard-core socialists. The only issues they're right on are immigration and being anti-EU, and even then, their stance against immigration isn't exactly held for the same reasons that most other people are against it.

‘UKIP got million votes and zero seats in Britain: lessons for the Republicans and the Tea Party’

“Exactly. It is a shame there are just so many people that fail to grasp this concept.”
++++++++++++++

And worse than the UK, which has fractional parliamentary representation system, is way more likely to have resulted in at least *some* representation for this group. Even such levels of support would be *way* less likely to result in any actual electoral power in our winner takes all system.

What should this CLEARLY tell us about 3rd parties? In case you’re still not sure: “In the history of the United States, not a single third party has come close to winning the presidency, only 7 3rd parties have even won a single state’s electoral votes and only 5 third parties have won even 10% of the vote.”

Sorry - going too fast on this sentence:
‘And worse than the UK, which has fractional parliamentary representation system, is way more likely to have resulted in at least *some* representation for this group.’

Better:
‘The UK’s fractional parliamentary representation system is way more likely to have resulted in at least *some* representation for this group than the US’ winner take all system.’
