Video: Republican Alabama gubernatorial candidate Tim James (and son of previous Gov. Fob James) vows in a new campaign ad that if he's elected, he'll give the state driver's license exam only in English, as a cost-saving measure. "This is Alabama; we speak English," he says in the ad. "If you want to live here, learn it."

I like the sentiment, but I'm not sure I understand how this is a cost-saving measure. The Alabama license exam is given on a computer, the foreign-language versions have already been produced, and there is no additional cost for administering the tests in English, Spanish, or any other language. Eliminating the other languages saves no money.

What language was the Constitution written in? Did they have several copies in Spanish too?

There are a lot like me... we just don’t know how many, or if that could make a difference.

Unless someone lived in a socialist, or socialist-leaning place, they cannot understand what is like.

That is a big problem, there is no frame of reference for a lot of voters, they just want to have their ears tickled (Biblical reference doesn’t not come to mind, but is there).

Argh!!!

What you did should be the law. If you can’t speak English, you can’t enter America.

I was at Sears to get some filters for a shop-vac and there was so much Spanish all over the boxes, that I could hardly make certain that I was getting the right ones for my model sweeper!

Of course, they were ALL made in "China" to boot!

Another disgusting trend that I am seeing all over TV are all of the Hispanics speaking English with very thick accents to shill their products.

Just as the various computerized phone services blabbering on in Spanish, "Para Espanole....." They did get the message that we hated having a computer voice answer and the first thing out of the box state "For English....!"

Enough is enough and it's time to get loud and demanding about our language "it is the Official Language, speak it or leave!"

Problem is that updates need to be kept current.
If they are not 100% accurate they get sued.

We have one official language, period.

Overseas, you can see that all countries take this seriously: except for tourism-frequented areas, it is their native language, that is it!

In fact, I recall some years back trying to:

- Get a Coke in France and not speaking French... got an attitude from the clerk... and a Coke, but that was because it is a well known word....

- Getting a ticket for a museum in Brazil, no English telling me of a discount for ‘mature’ people, the clerk pointed at the sign in Portuguese and gave me the discount...

Many more but what is the point? We are really screwed.

From my college days I was "taught" that the newer immigrants were less inclined to want to assimilate into the dominant American culture. This was in reference to only those who were here legally. Those coming her illegally have very little interest in assimilating. Of course, these "teachings" are purely generalizaions and do not apply to all people immigrating here.

You are correct that there is no way to know how many coming here are just like you were - that information wouldn't be shared with the average American as it doesn't fit the agenda of those in control. You are also correct that way too many people who have enjoyed the liberties and freedoms of this country for decades have no understanding of what it is like to live where freedom is only a dream. I share in your frustration.

Roger: it IS the law to become a Citizen, has been perhaps from the start of the Republic, is just that the Government does not require it...

Amazing since given the way I could not understood what so many Alabamans were saying when I was in Mobile, I didn’t think they spoke English, just gibberish...

*ducks and runs*

“I was so disgusted that I stormed out passing the Customer Service desk and loudly stated, “This is America, speak English!””

I was in a Schlotzsky's last year. A young girl waited on me and, for the life of me, she couldn't understand me and vice versa. I asked the manager if he had someone that could habla Inglis to take my order.

He got mad and kicked me out saying I was being too harsh.

I suspect he was banging the sweet young thing! Never been back. Their loss, not mine.

Yeah, you’re right about becoming a citizen, but I’m talking about all visitors, tourists, students, businessmen, guest workers. They should all be required to speak English before being allowed in. I have seen Japanese and Chinese business visitors who needed translators to transact business here. If you’re in America, you should speak Enflish.

'This is Alabama; we speak English,'

I've spoken English my entire life, and I've been to Alabama several times. Wonderful people, but in some places it's a stretch to call what they speak English.

On a more serious tip, this conflagration with Arizona may spur a movement in some states (apparently Alabama being one of them) to make English the official language of in-state governance and commerce.

I can only speak of those of us that came in the 70s.

ALL I knew came here to make money and either go back, or be American. No milking the system, no breaking laws, no nothing that was not on the up ‘n up.

Welfare was evil. We all paid cash for medical if we needed it. We had insurance and registered vehicles or used public transit. We were raised to be honest.

MOST of us were determined to be assimilated, many were not fond of keeping their ‘non-American’ identity. Many changed their names upon Naturalization so that there would be no immediate recognition of their origins... many did so because they were ashamed of the way their native country was ruled.

I have posted this on FR before but for the record, the USPS is now using postal carriers that mostly don't "Habla Ingles" in KS (the metro Kansas City, MO) area!

Do you think that these employees would pass the E-Verify thing?

I remember a girl from South Carolina, I knew way back around 1973. I asked her where she was from and she kept saying Shasta or something like that.

It took maybe a dozen tries before I finally figured out she was saying Chester. She was so pretty, I didn’t care how she said it.

Actually, now that I think about it, I loved to hear her talk. The strongest Southern Accent I have ever heard.

One more for the record.

Back when the US would freely issue visitor visas, it was an implied understanding that if you had an education and some cash, you would get one; staying in the US was OK.

Applying for a SS was not a problem, you would get one.
The SS system would flag it as a ‘Not Qualified to Work’ person, but the card would not be stamped.

Upon pressure, eventually, perhaps in the late 80s, the cards were stamped with the above message.

In the 80s ‘Green Cards’ were $50 on the street, very hard to recognize that they were not real... nobody did a thing about that.

So, back to today: it is obvious that there are powers-to-be that don’t want illegals to stop; this started many decades ago; it fits with the fact that one does not have to show evidence of Citizenship to vote.... duh!!!
