John Gardner, who recently confessed to killing both 14 year old Amber Dubois and 17 year old Chelsea King, has released a public apology. This apology is his first public statement since his confession, and was given to local news affiliate CBS News 8 of San Diego, CA. (original source)

His statement reads as follows:

"I'm sorry. I wish I could take it back. I know that it doesn't mean anything to anybody but I really am sorry for everything. I wish that I was able to get help when I tried to get help. I tried to seek out help and was not able to get any."

Apparently, John Gardner made an attempt to admit himself into a mental hospital just days before Chelsea King's murder ...

Well, that certainly makes everything better. Throwing him in jail won’t bring them back. Let him go.

His mother was a nurse and they think she couldn’t help him get admitted?

All she had to do was petition for involuntary admission proceedings. Takes a while but I’m sure she must’ve known about this.

She must not have realized the extent of his illness and how dangerous he was.

It does make things a little better. It makes it easier for the rest of us to move on with our lives and let go of the anger . . . after John Gardner’s date with Old Sparky.

it took my sister major effort over several years to get my nephew admitted... he is schizophrenic... he did things like bust all the windows in the house--on more than one occasion... i'm not excusing any of it... but it is difficult... now i do know someone who admitted herself into treatment, and she was taken right away... so i wonder why he wasn't when he tried to admit himself... or did he?

If you are in the hospital they can start to petition you for invol admit and it takes about a week I think. Outside the hospital takes longer.

I would imagine if someone was doing vandalism you could have them arrested, transfer from the police to a hospital and start the petition.

I don’t see how he ever could’ve tried to admit himself, you just get admitted, like you said, immediately.

He won’t meet Old Sparky. In return for his guilty pleas he was sentenced to life.
