As smooth and civilized as Jack Daniels whiskey, and with just as much kick, Barry Farber is one of America's legendary talk show hosts. Raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, he drank in with his mother's milk the art of storytelling and of painting memorable images with a gentle Southern accent. But before leaving college this knight errant had been editor of a daily newspaper, a wrestler, a steel worker, a representative of American college students in Yugoslavia and Brazil, an interpreter for units of the Chinese Nationalist Navy, and a Phi Beta Kappa student.
He’s a treasure trove of historical context.
Barry Farber — one of my heroes.
His mastery of languages fascinated me, and his ability with words gave great meaning to simple facts of reality. I forget his exact words, but one phrase has always remained with me -— about America’s might. He said something like “Never in the history of the world, has a country with such military might, used it less, nor such economic wealth (?strength?) and spread it more.” Those aren’t his exact words, but you get the gist.
I remember when he was talking with someone about covering the revolution in Cuba, and the person he was talking to mentioned his fear (then) of flying, and asked how he got to Cuba. He answered that he took a train to Florida and a boat to Cuba!!!!! LOL! Love it!!
He is a true treasure.
Wish there were more like him.
