Okay, folks, spring is here -- time to get out and about and, uh, fire off a couple of black powder volleys.

Civil War re-enactors take heed -- the Historic Crab Orchard Museum in Tazewell County, Virginia, will host the 6th Annual Skirmish at Jeffersonville on April 16-18, 2010. The Skirmish features living history camps, demonstrations, and battle reenactments complete with percussion muskets and black-powder artillery volleys.

Today is April 9--anniversary of Lee's surrender at Appomattox C.H.

CNN the other night was tearing into Gov. McDonnell for his proclamation about Confederate History Month and not making it all about slavery. I just saw a few seconds while flipping channels but enough to see what they were up to.

I heard about that — thank goodness, I didn’t actually hear it, since I don’t watch CNN — but what else could we expect? Nearly all of the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy were not slave holders and, whatever the broad issues may have been, they fought for their communities and the states, not for the plantation owners. But none of that matters in Politically Correct America — if it doesn’t comply with the liberal agenda of identity politics, it’s bad.

According to historical author Shelby Foote, less than 2% of confederate soldiers were slave owners.

Shelby Foote being a reasonably meticulous researcher, I’d say he’s right. The backbone of the Confederate army was farm boys, many of them drafted into service.
