The Apple iPad was released over weekend, and there was tremendous publicity and no small amount of punditry on the topic. Of course, as is only fitting for something released on Easter weekend, the Apple fans have said its the greatest thing ever, about to change the whole market, and no doubt going to raise the dead, heal the sick, and make the lame whole. Naturally, there are also the naysayers, a lot of whom have concentrated on how the iPad cant possibly live up to the hype. In particular, they noted that the iPad isnt going to save the magazine publishing industry because, as one research report put it (in all caps in the original):
Even if iPads fly off the shelves magazines will still only realize a small percent of their overall print revenue.
So lets cut through the hype for a few minutes. Yes, I do think the iPad is a pretty terrific device. (I should have a review of my first experiences with one in the next couple of days.) Its not something unexpected, though its really the first halting steps toward the next computer I predicted two years ago in one of my first pieces in Pajamas Media. It will change the world of computing, maybe as much as Google did, but dont depend on it to raise the dead or even cure your cold....

Whole cities will be designed around the I-pad!
</ Segway sarcasm>
“Raise the dead”? Hell....just give it a freakin’ USB port, for Pete’s sake. That’d be a start.
PING this over to the one who does posts on Apple computers.
I don’t want anything from those obama loving Apple dems...
I-pad...lots of jokes about that already.
A geriatric I-phone.
I think the Segway would’ve been huge at about $1000. At $5000 it’s been a non-issue.

Funny how I’ve managed to get through life without ever buying an Apple product. I guess I don’t know how empty my life really is. /s
don’t know. A friend of mine fell off one. he didn’t like it at all.
Shhhh, cost is no object to the iZombies. You'll get called a communist for daring to suggest that Apple's products are priced beyond what average people can afford. Not their marketing strategy, donchaknow.
Hmmmm, maybe if Apple purchased the rights to the Segway and marketed it as the iPutt.....
I've only been on one very briefly one time and I found it harder than it looks, but I assumed it would get much easier with a little practice.
I actually have an iPhone and an iMac. Like any other products, they have good points and bad. One of the bad is definitely the price. I will say this: When I first heard about iPad, I expected its pricing to start at about a grand and go up, so they did surprise me a bit. But it's still too much. And I don't think it's any kind of Game Changer in the world of computing, either. It's a pretty gizmo that lands somewhere between the iPhone and a tablet PC. I just happen not to believe the world of computing was screaming for that void to be filled. We shall see.
The iPad does plug into your computer's USB port. That's how you transfer files to the iPad. It also lets you recharge the battery. I am assuming you want to load pictures directly from your camera to the iPad. Is that your desire?
I agree with your iPad assessment. But I expect Apple will go back to the drawing board and produce a second generation that fixes the things their customers are complaining about. While Apple's supporters may want to wear blinders, no company that wants to stay in business does.
When will apple introduce the iFail? Maybe just for Barack?
LOL, post of the day.
Yup, we agree again. Aside from cultivating an attitude of snobbery and arrogance, there's certainly plenty to admire about Apple from a business perspective. They had dwindled down to a tiny niche player and they've most definitely changed that. In addition to the staggering success of iPod, they've brought the Mac brand back in a huge way.
And here’s another one for Swordmaker... :-)
It looks like, from the reports coming in, that the iPad may be breaking the records for sales for the iPhone when it was introduced. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s close enough right now to be giving the wild success of the iPhone a real “run for its money”... :-)
