As the Tea Party Express rolled into Searchlight on Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wasnt home. Instead, he spent his morning at the grand opening of the Clark County Shooting Park, firing a shotgun at one of the facilitys new ranges.
Everyone has said this is the greatest park in the United States of America, but I say its the greatest gun park in the world, Reid said.
Reid helped to secure land and $61 million for the 2,900-acre facility under the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. He was joined at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday by National Rifle Association of America Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Rep. Dina Titus, state Sen. John Jay Lee and Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins.
Reid practiced shooting at one of the ranges, firing six rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun and hitting two clay birds. Each clay bird busted into pieces and the crowd cheered as Reid reloaded the gun. Collins also fired several rounds.
Shooting at the park, on the northern edge of the valley, costs $7 per day for rifles, pistols and archery and $6 per 25-bird round for shotguns.
It has an archery range and building with a 30-seat classroom, a rifle and pistol range, and a shotgun center and 80 spaces for recreational vehicles.
LaPierre said the park is expected to be a tourist attraction with 35,000 to 40,000 people expected to participate in shooting activities each year.
I know how you worked, LaPierre said to Reid before turning back to the audience. (This) would not have opened without the work of Sen. Reid.
Since the park first opened on weekends in January, Lee said more than 4,000 shooters have participated which he called a significant amount considering the range hasnt been advertising.
The park will also be used for educational purposes, Collins said. Many youth groups have visited the park to learn about shooting sports and gun safety, he said.
Michael Reese, 15, said he has been shooting for seven years and visits the park every other weekend with his father. Its become a tradition for the two of them, he said.
Its a very nice facility, Reese said.
Ping, ping, ping, ping, ping!!!
Ping, ping, ping, ping, ping!!!
The NRA is the nations oldest and largest civil rights organization. Is it sometimes too timid? Yes. Does it support some scumbags like Reid who have a good record on Second Amendment rights but have a dismal record on all other civil rights? Yes
On balance the NRA does more good than bad and deserves our support. Other smaller but more conservative civil rights groups deserve our support as well.
Gun Owners of America,
Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership,
the Second Amendment Foundation,
Second Amendment Sisters (Which started right here on FR and produced the Armed Informed Mothers March counter to the so-called Million Mom March)
are some of the best civil rights groups out there.
We should belong to the NRA and at least two of these groups as well.
AMEN!
I don’t get it? What do you do for a living and what skin do you have in the game? Who are you? It’s easy to run your mouth from behind a keyboard and cause dissention. My name is Dana Kissick and my business is Fair Play Trading Post.
Anyone reading this should think long and hard before parroting the drivel that this poster is spewing. I have huge disagreements with the hierarchy of the NRA and am working to change MY ORGANIZATION. Sniping from the sidelines is for internet commandos under the camouflage of a hidden IP.
I agree and it is true about many subjects and other Freepers as well.
Reid helped to secure land and $61 million for the 2,900-acre facility under the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.
Such a program should not exist in the first place. It is just another of those government programs that sound good but are just avenues for manipulation and money grabbing by politicians. $61,000,000 should build one Hell of a shooting range but how much of that will be raked off into the hands of political supporters along the way?
Yeah, I hate those pork-barrel boondoggles as well. We need to pressure our NRA to distance the organization from entanglements like this and from politicians like Reid. It creates the atmosphere for the snipers to do their divisive work.
“Wake up guys! The NRA is a political animal. They are Washington insiders.”
Thats discouraging. Id hoped the NRA was getting back to its conservative roots rather than going the way of some of their board members like open border loving Muslim Grover Norquist. Im not even sure if hes still on their board, but he seems to have impacted them to lean toward the squishy middle.
What has the NRA got to do with Immigration and terrorism?http://towncriernews.blogspot.com/2005/12/what-has-nra-got-to-do-with.html
Let’s just say that the gun group that I am a part of in Iowa has been royally screwed. We have about 2,500 members in the state and got 49 votes in the house for real right to carry...and the NRA has fought it every step of the way.
I know. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen them illegally (according to Iowa law) threaten members of the legislature to endorse left-wing democrats, all in an attempt to get down a watered down bill through that the. democrat governor will sign.
This happens all over the country.
Wake up!
As I recall Neal Knox (Executive Board Member) tried that several years ago. I haven't given to any of their begging letters since.
A nameless, faceless bomb-thrower. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Truth will out.
When indeed.
Certain FReepers have been accused of NRA-bashing for as long as I can remember, yet the accusers always seem to find excuses for the compromises sellouts that typify the NRA.
Delving into the archives, this posting is just one example -- and there are plenty more. (Old-timers may recognize some FR handles on this thread, some of whom have stuck around and others who departed the forum.)
Another site worth investigating to learn more about the nation's largest and most well-funded gun control organization is NRAWOL, and the domain name pretty much says it all.
Hey Wayne, Harry is the enemy.
Thanks for finding that old thread....Bookmarking
You are very welcome! (It took all of about 30 seconds, and I don’t bill by the hour.)
Ask yourself what the goa has ever done. The only thing I have ever found they had tried to accomplish is an information drive for CCW licenses. And that's after five years of asking members. The ridiculous aspect to that was the goa has fought against gun licenses since the mid 1980's.
The whiners who hate the NRA are the same who hate them because they received a letter in the mail.
What do you think of Harry Reid?
Praise him for being for Second Amendment Rights to his face and stab in the back.
I hate all democrats.
The NRA wasn’t a lobbying group until the mid 1970’s so their so-called support of any gun legislation pro or con didn’t happen until then.
And it’s the goa who have been AWOL from the Katrina victims, the Winnetka, Oak Park, Morton Grove and Willow Springs residents.
The goa is the only gun group that took the narrow view for Heller. The NRA and the SAF are the only gun groups who are suing due to Heller.
goa = AWOL
Shhhh! Now you've gone and done it, you spilled the facts...............
