After I heard the 911 call I had my doubts. Any modern car will stop if you either, smash the brake down, use the emergency brake, shift in neutral, or turn the key back until only the eletronics work.
I have been smelling a big scam since these Prius stories surfaced.
Just like the Audi stories of the 70s, some dumb bugger hit the gas instead of the brake — initially — and then other lying cheating scumbags smelling lawsuit cash have chimed in hoping to hit Toyota in the wallet for “damages.”

While I have driven many cars and over one million miles in my life, I have not driven, but just a few times, since I left the USA in Jan. 2005.
I never saw a car that could not be switched off (first click of the ignition switch) or one that could not be shifted into neutral while moving, or inoperable brakes.
Are the cars that much different now?
I’d like to see a poll that asked whether the Prius incident was real or faked, and I’d like to see it broken down along ideological lines. I’ll bet ten bucks liberals would say real and conservatives faked. Everything is political these days, from the weather to your gas pedal.
This fraud guy was told about 20 times by the 911 police operator to put it in neutral but he kept saying he could not. The whole thing is a fraud. The guy was broke and his car was behind on his payments etc etc.
Almost every thing I have read, have heard and been told is modern brakes will stop any car. This was true with the Audi 5000/100.

I drive a 2000 Cav and I think the same holds true in all cars, that you can shift from drive to netural without depressing the button on the shifter or the brake. Also I think all cars have the two clicks to start a car, one click turns on the electronics and the next starts the engine. If it wasn’t for modern locking steering wheels it should be possible to steer a car with no power at all.
I've got a 2005 SUV with 4WD-Low capability that I need in winter for my steep country driveway. I went out one very cold morning and the engine was initially racing (around 1800 RPM). I threw it in 1st (1-low) and it started moving forward like it could climb a tree. I hit the brakes but they had iced and it seemed at first like I couldn't stop the car. So I really stood on the brake pedal, and it stopped the car with some effort.
Modern brakes will stop any car. Of course they might get kinda warm in the process if the engine is racing.
Someone got their 15 minutes with the “can’t stop” story.

Good point. If they are wet or really cold it can be a tougher. When they start to warm it will stop. Your setup probably has pretty strong pulling power too w/4WD. Very cold, 4WD, 1st low low gear, iced brakes. I would say that is a pretty good test.
I wonder if the electronics computer in cars backs off the throttle if people slam on the brakes.

The only real accident appears that cop in the Lexus with messed up floor mats. It was a loaner cause his car was being serviced. The mats were the wrongd size or something. Cheaps Ford even have little hooks to hold the drivers mat from sliding forward.
That's because liberals never believe anything is their fault and conservatives believe that people are responsible for their own actions.
Furthermore, conservatives are more likely to be convinced that responsible manufacturers, such as Toyota, test the every-loving bejeezuz out of EVERY component that goes into their cars and it is highly unlikely that they would allow a defective design in such a critical area to make it into production.
Additionally, conservatives have become jaded and disillusioned by the large numbers of potential scam artists and crooks out there who have cheerfully jumped into these controversies in the past, hoping for a free piece of the monetary settlements that might be made available. Liberals do not see anything wrong with that, because they believe that all corporate profits are dishonestly obtained anyhow, and any goodies they can get are justified.
Conservatives are more likely to feel sympathy for the workers, stockholders and product owners who see their efforts and investments improperly diminished by the actions of jackels eager to cash in on unproven allegations.

Pressing it when going less than 5 mph will cause a "parking-brake" action.
Pressing it when going over 5 mph will cause the engine to shift into neutral - then the driver can simply apply brakes and stop in a safe location.
Failing that, holding down the power switch for three seconds will actually shut the engine down completely.

Yep. Of course, shifting to neutral eliminates the problem, but since in my case I was trying to maneuver the car around, I needed it to be in gear. :)

I had a buddy in the 70's who drove his automatic with both feet -- right on the accelerator, left on the brake. It was so he could keep the engine going (otherwise it tended to stall at idle). He went through brake pads like crazy.

Exactly. Talk about a ready-made class action lawsuit for the looters. All you need is an easily fabricated story.
