`Not Sure.’
I’ve checked with my two daughters, both of whom have adequate education in genetics and anthropology to answer and it is meaningless to say anything more specific than ‘human’ if one is asked one’s ‘race’. There is the human race and there are subcategories, perhaps types (that would be Caucasoid, etc.). Being from Africa says nothing. Being from Europe says nothing. Falling for the question is easy to avoid.
Simply put ‘human’ and let them stew. You really can’t be more accurate than that.
The fine for lying is up to $500.
Neither fines have ever been enforced, because the government would lose in court.
We just got the census letter today as well. What a waste of money telling us that it is coming, next week.
Census has been asking the race question for a very long time - so this is nothing new. Unfortunately American isn’t a race.
I think in this day and age - there will be plenty of “other” responses. Maybe I will write in Native American.
What is the legal bottom line. What requests are legit; what requests can I tell them to pound sand on?
I read on an other thread that a DOJ lawyer, on a radio talk show, advised writing in “No information available” on the question you didn’t want to answer. That way there is no blank and you have given an answer.
Does anyone remember this and possibly know the lawyer’s name, or provide reference?
As far as race goes I just say I like the New Daytona 500(relaxed restricter plates)!
You can’t be fined for leaving a question blank (well, I don’t know about the 1st question). But they will definitely come to your door and pester you if you leave things blank.
I think you CAN be fined or imprisoned for LYING on the form.
Question 9 is about race, and the 1st answer is “White”. That is the one we are talking about answering “American”. Which isn’t a race, but a lot of the “race” qualifications are in fact national identities anyway.
What is the difference between “White” and “Caucasian”?
Native American isn’t one of the predefined categories, interestingly enough. Native Hawaiin and Native Alaskan are.
I think there has been a large push to use “American” in place of other “race” responses, including “White”.
Yesterday I saw some census chart showing the number-one “race” throughout the country, and in a lot of places, it was “American” — white was not, which makes me wonder about the whole figure and where I really saw it.
Hehe...in listening to Beck’s radio program today - he went through the 10 questions and said he’d only answer the 1st one. How many people live in this house?
It really shouldn’t matter what race you are, should it?
However, it is my understanding the Federal Government gives more Federal Funding (our money) to cities and states with more “minority” races. Why is that?
Another “none of your business question” on the Census was do you own your house/pay mortgage, own your house/no mortgage or rent. I really find that offensive. Why do they care other than they probably own most of the mortgages now.
Now I’m thinking for “RACE”...I’m just going to put “Yes”
“White” person is someone of Western European ancestry. “Caucasian” is an anthropological term not limited to persons from Western Europe, but rather for non-negroid people whose ancestors came Europe, the Middle East (Jews, Arabs), North Africa (Egyptians), West Asia, parts of central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.
What, are all of your sinks plugged?
And how do I really know where my people came from. Sure they told me they were from Ireland. I'm leaning toward Eskimo.
Race? I was always told we were Heinz 57.
However, I prefer to answer yes! Bring it, and bring your pinks!
AMF...
Quite right. "American" would be more rightly used if asked to identify "ethnic origin" or "cultural heritage". "Human", is the correct answer for "race".
The penalty for falsifying answers is greater than leaving some blank.
I intend to answer the primary question: How many people live here. The rest is NOTB.
Depends what the meaning of is is sort of. I tend to read more into the question I guess.
