A 30-year-old convicted sex offender, according to published reports, was charged last week with murdering and raping 17-year-old Chelsea King, who disappeared February 25th after heading out for a run in a park. Last week John Albert Gardner III stood in court in shackles showing no emotion as an attorney entered pleas of not guilty in the potential death penalty case.
Gardner was a repeat offender who in 2000 molested a 13-year-old neighbor. His home was located down the street from an elementary school and near the park where King was last seen Thursday wearing running clothes. The question that must be asked is whether repeat offenders like Gardner should...

Convicted sex offenders should be executed, in my opinion. If that is too hard-core, then they should be put in jail until they die. Carry them out in a box. No other exit.
I absolutely agree. It has been shown time and time again that it does no good to try and help these people. Will we never learn? If it was my daughter, I would want to be put in a room with the guy and lock the doors. If I lost the battle, put another father in the room.
No, he needed a bullet to the head.
First off, a proper description of a sex offender is needed. I know in Mass if you are observed peeing in the woods, or changing your clothes and observed by another, you can be charged as a sex offender. Kids necking in a car can be charged as well.
But for pedophiles, rapists... fine by me.
I agree - a clear and unambiguous definition would need to be agreed upon for who would be eligible for the death penalty. In cases of child rape/murder there is only one penalty that is appropriate IMHO. Death. And I would be okay if death was the outcome even in cases where the child was not murdered. I’m tired of hearing about these perps and the children who are victimized by them. If the state is unwilling to take action, give the perp to the family.
But within such a definition, people just need to reach the conclusion: If you are convicted of having sex with a 6-year-old, there are no extentuating circumstances that would ever allow you to walk free again. It's over for you.
It’s odd that he didn’t get more of a sentence the first time (the first time he was caught, at least). He lured a neighbor girl to his home to watch a movie and he beat her badly, but somehow she escaped before he could carry out the sexual attack. But the fact that he beat her should have been enough of an indication that he was violent and dangerous.
Yeah, pretty much sums it up.

I agree fully. Execute them. They are broken eggs. They cannot be repaired. I don’t want to give them 3 hots and a cot for the rest of their lives.
Prisoners in the USA get nicer TV’s and libraries tham most of us have. It costs a bunch of money to keep them there.
I say give them a bullet with a firing squad ASAP after capture.
This is one class of criminal that I have no objection to officers gunning down ‘just because’!!
They are vermin.
Keep in mind that despite better treatment of rape victims- it is still contended that less than 50% of rapes are NEVER reported.

Which offenses?
Its odd that he didnt get more of a sentence the first time (the first time he was caught, at least). “
He was convicted of charges that should have carried 30 years minimum of incarceration.
He PLEA BARGAINED down to 6 years. He had to wear a monitor for another 2 years. All these disappearances happened after he was shed of all those restrictions, alltho he is a life time registrant for his action.
I would like to see prosecution of the district attorney who allowed the plea bargain. This case is a classic for the problems in the incarceration or death of sex offenders.
The head shrink on this guys case told the prosecutors years ago that this person definately was NOT a candidate for release. He would continue to re-offend against young women. He has shown absolutely no remorse for his actions against the 13 y/o.
Yes, of course, that's the point.
If the child gets away, or is raped but not murdered, THE DEATH OF SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD IS A CERTAINTY.
Where and when, we don't know, of course, but it's only a matter of time.
Kidnapping, assault, and rape or sexual congress with a stranger victim.
Let's start there.
But I will mention another issue that some folks try to greatly weaken by a rhetorical gambit that annoys me:
Should abortion is illegal? Well ... maybe ... but-but-but what about an 11-year old? An 11-year-old who was raped? Raped by -- by her father! Surely you wouldn't be so cruel as to deny that girl an abortion! You wouldn't make her carry the baby to term, would you??
Well, yes, I would.
I've seen a lot of people come up with examples of what they term "gross injustice" who then use that as a wedge to keep the door open and make abortion freely available to all. I don't like it.
Just so, I imagine that a certain "sex offense" could be identified that surely deserves nothign so extreme as execution or lifetime imprisonment. But that ought not to change the fact that serious sex offenders cannot ever be cured, and cannot be allowed out into society.
So, if you want to specify certain "sex offenses" that you think should handled in a mild manner, go right ahead. But I'm not going to take my eye off the ball -- sex offenders need to be removed from society.
I agree.
First let me say pedophiles did not kill the kids so readily as they do now a days.
Kids didnt tell back then. Just the way it was.
Secondly it is not uncommon for girls to seek older guys and actually want to have relations (yes immorral but I know of accounts) and telling the guys they are legal age of concent.
Then when Mom/Dad find out they scream victem.
Guy goes to jail.
One girl (now of age but wasnt then) pulled it twice and folks took the men to court for prosecution.
Even the Judge raised an eyebrow on this girl supposedly being a victem twice in one year.
The girl was at her job bragging on how she was going to get these men in to the sack then her folks got wind of it.
Ticked me off, so out of line I told the girl (I am a woman) if you keeping it up you might not be so lucky with the next guy and end up not coming home at all, and as a now 18yr old you cannot cry statutory rape when your folks find out you are an ADULT and responsible for your actions now! Also you can rest assure men will pass you around to use and think nothing of it.
Oh she didnt like that at all cried she was traumatized.
(btw she pulled this back when she was 13 too blaming a relative of molestatin ended up fessin up she did it so not to get in trouble for staying out all night).
Well she ended up preggers just about a month after turning 18, cant cry bad man now.
I ended up ticking of those adults who wanted to protect her (no big deal) and the girl now is an unwed Mom and two men are now with a record of sexual whatever they call it.
A third guy is a unwed Dad and with her past of lying I can almost bet and double down this guy wont stick around.
Yes should be a seperation between rapists/murderers and the other class of sexual/lewd acts.
And there are quite a few more cases around here of girls going for it and then screaming sexual crime when the folks get wind of it and set out to protect ther kids.
The two girls that come to mind are repeat cry wolfers.
Both were 16/17 and out chasing the guys/men.
You made that perfectly clear..clear case guy.
Gads. How do you plea bargain down something like that, especially so drastically? The DA does have a lot to explain.
I know someone who works in law enforcement, dealing with cases like this, and she says that one of the problems is that judges and district attorneys sometimes don’t take these cases very seriously and want to give the guy another chance. Well, they do...another chance to rape or kill.
Count me as another FReeper for the death penalty for forcible rape, forcible sodomy, rape of a child (they can’t possibly consent).
Not for public urination, date rape, statutory rape. I think of date rape and statutory rapes as serious crimes but one is difficult to prove and the other is not necessarily the trauma to the victim that forcible rape is. Also men can get tricked in re: statutory rape.
