Anti-Immigration Hate Groups Surging, Reports SPLC (Barf-etti, barf barf barf)

From the recent attack on an IRS building in Austin, Texas, to assassination plots by skinheads on Obama, "anti-government 'patriot' groups—militias and other extremist organizations that see the federal government as their enemy—[have come] roaring back to life," reports the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a civil-rights organization that tracks active hate groups nationwide.

The SPLC's just-released annual report entitled "Rage on the Right" found that extremist organizations saw "an astonishing rise," increasing 244 percent from 149 to 512 over the past 12 months. SPLC has added 363 new groups to its annual list, compiled using a combination of hate-group publications, web sites, law-enforcement reports, sources in the field and news stories.

"This extraordinary growth is a cause for grave concern," said SPLC's Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project and author of the report. "The people associated with the 'patriot' movement during its 1990s heyday produced an enormous amount of violence, most dramatically the Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead." Last summer, the Department of Homeland Security released a nine-page report alerting law-enforcement officials of an increase in right-wing extremist activity, which "was spot on," said Potok in a teleconference yesterday.

The right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant movements' growth, which SPLC attributes to soaring consumer debt, a sagging economy, shifting demographics and various "socialist-branded" initiatives introduced by a Black president, "is being stoked by [certain] politicians and conspirators," adds Potak, pointing to Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, Minnesota Rep. Michele Backnamm and others. "These people have brought their ideas from the margins to mainstream."

The IRS incident in Texas involved a Democrat.
