If Tilikum was a Dog, He'd be Put Down

Killer Whale at Sea World

"The other morning on Fox News, they interviewed a nice gentleman from New York and asked him what “Tili” was thinking when she killed her trainer. What the whale was thinking? We have shrinks that talk to whales now?! Is this a Dr. Doolittle comedy or something? Why are we trying to get into the mind of this whale to better understand its feelings?!

Actually, the White House today announced you can no longer call them Killer Whales at Sea World. They actually are Freedom Fish taking part in an Underseas Contingency Operation!! After all, to just call them all “killers” adds to the problem. We need to keep this whale alive and try to figure out why it hates us so much.

President Obama today offered to meet with the Freedom Fish leader to negotiate.

This is way beyond Nutty, people! If Tili were a dog he would have been put to sleep in Davy Jones’ Locker already!

Funny and sad. The whale should have been ‘put down’ after killing his first human. Tragic that folks lack a moral common sense on this issue.

Dogs have well over ten thousand years of domestication. A creature known as a “killer” whale is a predator. It will always be a predator, no matter how many balls it balances on its nose or treats it delicately snags from human hands. To kill it for doing what it does is churlish.

The difference is that a dog is a domesticated animal that is supposed to have had its mankiller instincts bred out of it. The killer whale is a trained wild animal, but it is not domesticated.

There’s definitely a Darwinian lesson to be learned hear. But not by the whale.

Free him already along with all the other ones.

Keeping them captive to do stupid tricks for human delectation is a travesty.

Sir, we kill it because IT killed a human, and WE are humans.

There is a reason that they are not called fluffy little sea puppies (saw that here a couple days ago.)Anyone having anything to do with wild animals takes their lives in their hands.

We should not be keeping these things in captivity.

Well, now that the whale has a track record, anyone who continues to work with it is an idiot.

“The whale should have been ‘put down’ after killing his first human. “

I disagree. The whale isn’t a domesticated animal. After he first killed, the whale should have been segregated, and not trusted with humans in the water with him. Releasing him to the wild would be preferable to putting him down, although both actions would likely have the same result.

Sea World’s greed in not wanting to lose money on this particular whale is a direct cause of this trainer’s death, and Sea World is likely to be facing a lawsuit. I know I’d sue if I were in the trainer’s family.

Fact of the matter is that he was merely following his natural instinct's. He is a predator in the wild and he is wired to kill. He didn't see a human, he saw a baby seal's tail.

Yes, it's sad and tragic, but we have to remember they are wild animals and not tame dogs and cats who also can turn on humans.

“Free him already along with all the other ones.”

I doubt if it’s that easy. Does he even know how to survive in the wild anymore. Bad PR if he comes washing up on a beach the next week.

Even worse PR (and maybe legal liability) if he kills someone else when free. I can imagine him being attracted to people and docks, sicne that’s where the food always was.

What part of PREDATOR and KILLER do all these exhibitors, trainers, and animal psychologists not understand? These animals are wired to occasionally hurl themselves out of the water and onto ice to pluck off unlucky seals. Why would you think they would not go after humans?

Beside me right now is a rescued dog that comes to work with me every day. We are devoted to each other, but I never forget that she has some instincts that I must respect. I also remember that I am responsible for the safety of others, who do not know how she was formerly mistreated by other people.

The name of the game here is common sense and responsibility.

If a horse kicks his trainer and kills him or maims him do we put the horse down?

Just wondering.

We almost never kill humans who kill humans. We put them in jail. This beast is already in jail.

We cull our cattle for disposition. Even though they are domesticated, some will show a tendency towards aggression. They will also pass this to their offspring. I understand this bull whale is used for breeding purposes...they are only asking for trouble.

Sorry Karl but I belive the difference is that the Orca is worth more than $1,000,000.

Very good analogy. I take a risk every time I look at a horse. I know the dangers and the risks and take care whenever I am around them. It is part of the job. If one is a lion trainer (Roy?) or a Killer Whale trainer one has risks. The job better have pay commensurate with the risks.
