Here is a local news report on massive pileups in the Kansas City area that shut down Interstate 70 today, February 14, 2010. Snow reportedly came in and caused almost immediate white-out conditions, leading to a massive pileup involving more than 50 cars, and other smaller pileups as well. (VIDEO)
Bad situation for all those involved!
That is a huge mess
Wow. Been through there hundreds of time, close to home. Glad all of my folks are safe at home. My daughter and granddaughter were driving south from Omaha but got home before the snow storm.
Been thru there lots of times...usually this happens with ice...didn’t see any mention of ice though!
Wow. Separate pileups west bound and east bound. Must have been a nasty snow squall.
It's different snow.
Big rigs haul as many as three trailers behind them in these parts of the world and if there is any amount of light snow they can create a white-out of their own when they pass. Been in one of those-has to be worse than waterboarding. Now that there are so many wind-up cars on the road expect there to be significant damage and insurance rates will be going up.
The snow melted on roads as it fell, then turned to black ice. The roads just appeared wet. No one slows for wet roads, thus the carnage you see.
Very true, except this was probably a result of the white out more then it was the black ice. White outs are very dangeous, been in one before, your in it before you know what hits you if you don't know how to read the weather ahead of you or off to the side of you. Went to pass a car that was slowing down because they knew what to expect, before I knew it I couldn't slow down fast enough, at one point while I was slowing down quickly I figured I was in the wrong lane, and moved over some, I was right, the next thing I saw was the tail lights of a car just ahead of me, I pulled the steering wheel hard to the right and went into the ditch. Fortunately I didn't total the car, or get hurt. Fortunately no body was coming from the other direction either.
I was just repeating what local news said happened. Many cars spinning out and wrecking all over town. People just refuse to slow down. I hate driving in KC.
I agree with you, they just refuse to slow down, the closer you get to a city it seems the faster people seem to drive, the bigger the city the faster they drive. I notice this was in the Kansas City area.
Thank you for the Ping, Ernest. That is a terrible accident!
Ice will do that to you.
Yep, it sure can. That's one thing to be thankful for in Southern California. I learned to drive on ice and sometimes I miss the colder weather, the beautiful Autumns, followed by bare trees and white snow on the ground in Winter.
