"The Folks" or just an "Everyday Person"? (And Bill O'Reilly Steals from Mark Levin)

I just heard Rush talking about how Bill O’Reilly owns the rights to the term “the folks”. He gave me a nice laugh because it always bothers me when O’Reilly says that. That along with another term media pundits like to use “everyday people” seem so condescending. Who do these people think they are? I'm embarassed for them when they use such platitudes. Because they sit in front of a camera and scream at each other they think they are the “elite” and the rest are just the lowly “folks” and “everyday people”. Such subtle terms really reveal the delusions of grandeur they have about themselves.

I strive to be an every month person but you sometimes have to take baby steps. I would like to think I am at LEAST and every-OTHER-day person.

Subsequently, I noticed that O’Reilly recently stole a technique from Mark Levin. One thing I noticed years ago that Mark Levin does on his radio show when he’s telling a producer to play a clip, the second he’s ready Mark has always emphatically said “GO!”. That’s Levin’s cool style. Now, I have been watching O’Reilly since 1998 (though much less lately) and I KNOW that he never used to do that but suddenly, in the past couple months, he’s doing it on Fox.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as the cliché goes but what makes it particularly surprising – and amusing- is the fact that O’Reilly recently ATTACKED Levin (and Rush) with extremely malicious accusations of being phonies and opportunists! If you never heard about that, just watch the video below for some context and you will probably be as amused as I am by the fact that after all of that, O’Reilly has chosen to IMITATE Mark Levin every night on his show.

Beware of anyone who uses the term 'masses' . . . seriously.

I have to agree. I said on another thread several days ago that if I hear BOR say “the folks” one more time I’d scream bloody murder.

It IS condescending, not to mention annoying as hell.

I think some folks are getting unnecessarily stirred up over the use of the word, “folks”. I use that word often and have never thought of it as being condescending in any way, shape or form.

For what it’s worth, the definition of “folk” or plural, “folks”.

n. pl. folk or folks
1.
a. The common people of a society or region considered as the representatives of a traditional way of life and especially as the originators or carriers of the customs, beliefs, and arts that make up a distinctive culture: a leader who came from the folk.
b. Archaic A nation; a people.
2. Informal People in general. Often used in the plural: Folks around here are very friendly.
3. People of a specified group or kind. Often used in the plural: city folks; rich folk.
4. folks Informal
a. The members of one’s family or childhood household; one’s relatives.
b. One’s parents: My folks are coming for a visit.
adj.
Of, occurring in, or originating among the common people: folk culture; a folk hero.
Idiom:
just folks Informal
Down-to-earth, open-hearted.

As for me, I’m rather fond of good folks.

Last week, O’Reilly stated that he “just can’t put his finger on what exactly the “teaparty movement” is. I just laughed. Hey, O’Reilly, it’s “the folks”, ya know, the people you say you are always “lookin out for”.

I doubt if O’Reilly stole anything from Mark Levin, since O’Reilly is too ignorant to know who Levin is. I have noticed O’reilly leaning more and more left, probably in reaction to the MSM calling him “conservative”, which he never was. Frankly, I don’t think O’reilly is bright enough to have any political principles, even liberalism. He seems to view everything through a prism of some kind of 1950’s suburban Catholisism, which he probably developed in his youth and never grew out of. Ever notice how many outdated words and phrases he used in his normal speech?

No. It is a matter of timing and style. I notice these things as a life-long broadcaster and being the son of a life-long tv/radio broadcaster. No other radio personality besides Levin did this in this manner, nor did O’Reilly until recently.

Coincidence? I doubt it since we KNOW O’Reilly listens to Levin as O’Reilly went out of his way on his own show to attack Levin.

I hope you are being deliberately obtuse. If I have to explain anymore of this to you, I will refrain from wasting anymore of my time.

Ozzymandus, We KNOW O’Reilly listens to Levin as O’Reilly went out of his way on his own show to attack Levin.

You apparently have not watched the video to which I referred in this column because if you had, you would never have written that “O’Reilly is too ignorant to know who Levin is.”. (The video is at the site linked above if you want to watch it.) That would be impossible. Although, I do agree that O’Reilly is clearly ignorant.

sorry, i don’t understand either. maybe we’d have to hear it, the inflection, the length of the vowel (o) vs length of diphthong (w) to understand but this is quite a stretch as you have laid it out here

Mark Levin thinks he owns every word and every conservative thought ever and we should acknowledge him before we talk about conservative ideals. Im listening to him now, and he has been talking about how smart he is for about 15 minutes.

Radio (and/or TV Hosts)do not start talking about a clip and then shout “Go”. It’s just unnatural but it was unique to Levin. I noticed it IMMEDIATELY when I first listened to him. I have been listening to O’Reilly much longer and trust me if you pulled out 10 years of show archives and watched every episode, you would find that he NEVER introduced a clip that way. He only started recently and it was -after- the big Mark Levin showdown. He clearly started listening to Levin recently and he clearly copied him on this stylistic manner.

It obviously isn’t important but if you haven’t heard what I’m talking about, listen to the clip I posted at the above linked blog. “GO!”

My degree and my entire life has been in Broadcast Communications. I hone in on speech and style.
